About this deal

Found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the Brown Mountain Lights are a true Appalachian mountain mystery.

This anthology is comprised of 8 tales with a lot of recognisable names from the indie horror scene. Whilst reading this, I was really reminded of The Ritual by Adam Nevill. A brilliant book I urge you to read at once. It's based around four old friends hiking in the Swedish forests where they ultimately get lost and find themselves becoming hunted. We decided to go bouldering around the bottom of the waterfall, there are various little pools and boulders where the water runs off from the waterfall. This bouldering trail is not on the main trail, and not many hikers ever veer off of the main trail. Hence, these social workers brought what became the first wave of modernization to the hills. For instance, trained nurses taught families about personal hygiene and homemaking skills. Teachers taught children to read and write. While midwives helped deliver babies in the remote hollows. Indeed, some social workers risked their lives braving rough mountain roads, swollen streams, and treacherous bridges to reach these isolated families.Appalachian ecologist Elizabeth A. Byers says this topography “creates a vast number of ecological niches with differing elevation, slope, aspect, temperature, and rainfall. These niches have been slowly filled with species that are particularly adapted to their environments.” The second volume of the legendary “Foxfire” series provides a tell-all on Appalachia’s arcane unknown. David Wilson writes for “Foxfire’s” chapter on boogers, witches and haints, “That the people of these mountains have a rich supply of ‘haint’ tales is not at all surprising. They had conquered the land — but only in a small area around their doors. No matter how friendly the woods seemed in daylight, there were noises and mysterious lights there at night that were hard to ignore if you were out there all alone.” Many ideas about Powell and the reasons why he still haunts the area have been sparked by the fact that no one knows how he died. A lot of effort has also been put into creating elaborate stories to explain Powell’s fate, but the real facts appear to have been lost to time. However, there is one theme nearly always associated with Appalachia in film that is interestingly almost entirely absent in The Night of the Hunter: poverty. Despite John’s distrust of Powell, the charismatic preacher-conman methodically inserts himself into the childrens’ lives, only revealing his depraved true self to John as he pressures them to give up their father’s secret. When society fails to protect them, the young John and Pearl must take their fate into their own hands as they flee before Powell’s unrelenting menace.

End trails by John Morgan- Two coincidental Appalachian Trail buddies (using trail names) run from an unknown horror Settler log cabins were often cramped, one-room homes. Inside, the women would dye clothes with berries and bark gathered from the forest. Cooking took place in large stone fireplaces. While in-between chores, they would knit quilts on their looms, using elaborate patterns with unique names like “nine-patch,”“double-wedding ring” and “dove-in-the-window.” Appalachian FolkloreBut these loggers and miners found themselves working extremely long hours, with the constant threat of accidents, dismemberment, and death. Still, many had no choice but to accept such conditions to support their often impoverished families. Winners - The Audioverse Awards". Audioverse Awards. 17 April 2022. An hour or so in and we are in the center of a extremely long and narrow lake. Unfortunately, a storm started to blow in and the waves on the lake swelled to 2+ feet. Too much for our dinky canoes. We pull off to a random clearing on the shore and setup camp in rush to avoid being totally thrashed by a rainstorm. We just setup camp and hunker down for the night.

I just love reading horror anthologies, especially themed ones. I'd just finished with Crystal Lake's Welcome to the Show, themed around a legendary music venue in San Francisco which blew me away. Appalachian Horror from Bo Chapell and Aphotic which followed next had a lot to live up to.In addition, modern technological advances had a dramatic impact on Appalachian culture. In this once-isolated region, new highways along with radio, television, and the internet, diluted traditional speech and customs. A father living out in the wild with his daughter knows trouble is ahead when he starts finding dead bodies on his farm. Trouble is they won't stay still. Legend tells of a brutal battle between Cherokee and Catawba warriorson Brown Mountain, which left many dead on the battlefield. In conclusion, Appalachian ghost stories are still told, if only in storytelling festivals, movies or books. But what serves as entertainment today was once the delivery system for a unique culture’s beliefs, hopes and fears in a strange, isolated world. By telling these ghost stories, through mediums known and not yet known, the elder voices of Appalachia live on. Bonus: Appalachian Dialect
