Other regular characters included Moll the innkeeper (Shirley Cameron), Kate Bell (Helen Morse), a former inmate of the notorious Female Factory at Parramatta, and former comic Willie Fennell as a shepherd who the Firbeck family befriends. Tobias, with his rugged good looks was already on his way to making a career of period-piece dramas having previously starred in Arthur of the Britons, he would follow this series with a guest appearance in Dick Turpin and a starring role in Smuggler. Filmed entirely on location, it is a tale of pioneering and achievement against bitter odds, in which a family struggles to carve out an existence in a land more dangerous and more brutal than the West at its wildest. The recently widowed and retired naval lieutenant James Firbeck takes his family, sons, Samuel and Luke and daughter Jassy to New South Wales to claim a grant of land. In the early 19th Century, a man takes his children to Australia to start a new life, but finds that the land he was left by a friend has been settled by others. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Used to like this programme years ago and bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, I was not disappointed but thought it was a longer series than it actually is. Executive producer and former BBC documentary man Tony Essex died 10 days after the series was finished. He displayed a ruthless and decidedly cruel streak and was motivated by just two things – his desire to succeed as a rancher by any means and his quasi-incestuous love for his sister Jassy.

Oliver Tobias Freitag, known professionally as Oliver Tobias, is a Swiss-born UK-based film, stage, and television actor and director. The way the natives are treated almost seems to be an over zealous approach to a normal stereotypical one of either ignoring them of making them out to be the baddies, but although it shows some ill-treatment and injustice, they appear to sit in groups waiting for white man to bring grog or work until they fight or are attacked. Future Hollywood actor Robert Shaw (The Sting, Jaws) made his small screen debut as ex- pirate Dan Tempest, the leader of a small band of freebooters who roamed the Caribbean Seas in the 1720's on their ship The Sultana. Starring Oliver Tobias and produced by Tony Essex, the series is an epic adventure series set in Australia as it is being colonised. Little aired since that date, it's a surprisingly lavish affair with a large cast, huge scope, and plenty of production value.

Oh well - you can't have everything, and I guess if it wasn't for Network's admirable 'release it anyway' policy there would be many gems which would never see the light of day. The series starred Oliver Tobias as an Englishman who, in 1829, emigrates to Australia with his father and siblings to settle on a land grant in New South Wales. my daughter was just a few mth old when i first watched it,shes now 38 and i still enjoy watching it. In 1829, following the tragic death of his wife, retired naval officer Jason Firbeck (James Condon) takes his three adult children – two sons and a daughter – from their home in Yorkshire and heads for the new land of Australia, determined to build a new life for themselves in New South Wales – which at the time was also still a penal colony. All in all I can say I am glad I watched it, as it was an interesting series that made some attempts to cover the colonisation more truthfully than the general rose-coloured versions of difficult stories that appear on the small screen, but I can't say that I really enjoyed it. I hadn't seen it before, and it is slightly worrying that I now look forward to the different idents, break bumpers (also present on all episodes) and end credits as much as the programmes - thank you Network!part Anglo / Australian co-production that was two years in the making and told the adventures of the Firbeck family who are uprooted from their Yorkshire home by their father in 1829 following the death of their mother, and taken to the other side of the world to start afresh in New South Wales. The programme's popularity at the time (and no doubt part of its enduring appeal) is the smolderingly handsome Luke himself, played by a pre-'The Bitch' Oliver Tobias at his physical prime.
