About this deal

But if you don't need one, that's just fine - it's not for everyone obviously (nice shot above BTW). Method - use pin-point auto focus - track the subject with the red dot and rely on the GX9* (wash my mouth out ) AF to get it right.

When panning quickly the red reticle can appear slightly decentralized as if it has some sort of delay. I have one - it works but the limited range of frame lines is a minor issue as it does give a very useful reference point to start with.Unfortunately there must be other factors at play as when I line up the dots- it was not in fact calibrated for whatever reason. b) it screws down tight onto the hot shoe, whereas (it's claimed) the Oly EE-1 dot sight is a bit wobbly on the hot shoe.

Try the trick of keeping both eyes open and the free eye will give you heaps of peripheral vision when tracking. This mount makes camera handling more comfortable, with the elbows resting against the rib cage, one hand gripping the camera and the other under the lens, and the back of the camera against the face in the usual long-lens handling posture. I find it valuable for very small/fast subjects and for tighter compositions (longer focal lengths); but it does become more of a spray-and-pray situation because you aren't actually seeing the composition/focus.I do suspect that you might have to make a shade for the lens from an empty toilet paper roll or something on bright weather though since it does reflect some light, but I may be wrong. I guess the best way to describe in one sentence the practical use of the dot sight with a Telephoto is the following comparison with a giant Telescope in observatories: it is impossible to locate the star you are looking for in the sky through the giant telescope directly: so they are all equipped with a smaller aiming scope giving you a target on a larger angle of view. Once you have calibrated the device for the first time and understand what's going on, it is easy to do. Olympus introduced the Dot Sight first in the form of the SP-100, a superzoom bridge camera that has it built-in. If I am going out knowing that I am going to take photos of birds, then I fit and recalibrate my EE-1 the day before.
