I have so many favorite parts of this story, but first, I enjoy that Bruce is at home reading the paper aloud, possibly just to himself. It is, in retrospect, pretty wild that after only a single year it introduces two characters that will, unbeknownst to its authors at the time I’m sure, remain absolutely central to the Batman universe right to present day. He was briefly succeeded in the role of Batman by his former junior partner, Dick Grayson, after Wayne retired.Unlike some other Golden Age and Silver Age DC heroes, the Earth-One and Earth-Two Batmen were different versions of the same character, with the same name, the same origin, the same modus operandi, and most of the same friends and foes. With valuable time bought by this distraction, he has time to do some last-minute, high-stress science. But don’t worry, surely Batman will find a cure to save himself and reverse the terrible afflictions Strange has visited upon his unwitting victims/accomplices, right? The most notable difference between pre-Crisis Earth-Two Wayne and his newer post-Crisis Earth-2 incarnation is that the post-Crisis Earth-2 Joker learned the real identities of Robin and the Huntress after turning Gotham DA Harvey Simms into the new Two-Face (Harvey knowing Helena's identity already). I also just need to point out that at some point in the chaos, Strange made his “monsters” not only gigantic fifteen-foot tall clothes and coats but also giant hats, as we saw earlier.

As a recognized effective crime-fighter, Batman was recruited by the United States federal government as part of a covert strike force against Nazi operations in Europe that ultimately defeated an assassination attempt on the life of President Franklin Roosevelt.Scanned directly from original copies held in the DC archives, these seminal stories collect the earliest – often startling – incarnations of our modern Super Hero icons. In it, he charged the JSA with treason, being spies for Hitler, resulting in the team being put on trial. All this is to say nothing of some of the truly unhinged choices made in this issue, which must be experienced firsthand, which I’ll comment on in my notes to the individual stories as they’ll deserve their own highlight. It’s an issue saturated with grinning corpses and meaningless deaths in an almost existential darkness. Long-running subplots dealt with corporate intrigues at the Wayne Foundation as well as Bruce/Batman's romances with Vicki Vale, Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and the sort-of villain Nocturna.

But when The Joker guns down Brute and flees while making the exact same kind of snarky comment that Bruce is making, this juxtaposition becomes suddenly loaded. A key architect of DC’s modern shared universe, she introduced the graphic novel to America and transformed comics into a sophisticated art form.He dedicated himself to intense physical training and mastered many then cutting-edge scientific techniques, including what would later be termed as forensics and criminal sciences. But, Robin takes on the four thugs and beats the bejesus out of them, so no harm, no foul (I GUESS). During " Batman: Knightfall", the storylines split in two directions, following both the Azrael-Batman's adventures, and Bruce Wayne's quest to become Batman once more. Note that a character's first published or broadcast appearance is not necessarily his or her first chronological appearance.

In these early stories, Superman has yet to gain his famous powers of flight and battles corrupt landlords in lieu of crazed Super-Villains. These panels also exemplify the subtle shift to a less visually dense style (after the establishing ‘shot,’ the backgrounds become single colors with mostly silhouetted decoration) that nonetheless contains a lot of text. And then I was surprised to see them doing kissing all the way back in Year One’s Catwoman: Her Sister’s Keeper. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln.

Please note that this chronology does not discuss the modern Earth 2 of DC's current, post- Flashpoint universe.
