That's certainly not a bad thing for everyone, but the inclusion of so many of those mundane and lighthearted moments more or less ignoring the strange and dangerous reality in front of them made it feel unfocused to me, and made the tension feel overly slack. I was trying to figure out what was going on with the two young kids and was expecting at any moment they would turn into demon children. Evie Hallowell is every bit as strange as her younger sisters, and yet Marin is drawn in by Evie’s compelling behavior and ethereal grace. Marin’s yearning for a place to belong informs most of the narrative, which starts off with her as the outsider looking in but shifts as she slowly but surely carves her way into becoming part of the family in unexpected ways.
