About this deal

It tells of his childhood, where and when he attended school, and how he became a skilled toolmaker and then a professional football player. This book explains very clearly his thought process into how he successfully managed the biggest soccer club in the world through an era of unprecedented success and fame. Anyone could use his ideas, lessons and thoughts in their lives, be it managing themselves or a huge team. Essential reading for any Manchester United Fan, or any football manager who wants to be as successful as Ferguson.

It is these highlights that he tells in this work starting from his days working in the Govan shipyard right up to his retirement as manager of Manchester United. For all Ferguson's continual references to "power" and "control", his autobiography barely addresses the biggest power struggle of them all.Author and Journalist Frank Worall published his biography on the Old Scot in charge of Manchester United a few months United won their 12th EPL title under Ferguson in 2011.

So reading this was so nice, it was like I was taking a peek behind the curtains of what I used to see on the pitch or on TV. What I find it hardest to get my head around is paying the equivalent of a major firm's annual output to acquire a man to kick a ball. Over more than twenty-five years, he presided over seismic changes at Manchester United with the only constant being his steady hand that consistently won the club titles. This book chronicles his rise from a small house alongside the Govan shipbuilding yard to the stairs of Hampden Park as a player, the pitch of Ibrox as a centre forward for his beloved Glasgow Rangers, to behind the counter at his own pub "Fergie's", to Gothenburg where a Scottish side beat the mighty Real Madrid to win the European Cup and finally to the Camp Nou, where Solskjaer won it to make Sir Alex Ferguson a club legend, and to be spoken of in the same line as Sir Matt Busby. He went on to play for Queen's Park and five other professional football clubs including the idols of his boyhood, Rangers. This was a great read and is a fascinating insight into how Manchester United was rebuilt under Ferguson. This is "control" – the key word in Ferguson's philosophy of management – exerted well after the final whistle has been blown.

The tell all book reveals what he thought about his players – he tears into Roy Keane, tells about his fallout with David Beckham. These included 13 championships in the Premier League, five cup victories in the Football Association (FA) Cup, and two Champions League titles. It was at the latter where he would really come into his own and even got his name on a stand and even a statue. Over the past four years, Sir Alex has been reflecting on and jotting down the highlights of his extraordinary career and in his new book he will reveal his amazing story as it unfolded, from his very early days in the tough shipyard areas of Govan. They finished 11th, 2nd, 11th, and 13th in the top division in England and this nearly led to Ferguson getting fired. The book took the readers into Ferguson’s life, from his early life in Govan, Scotland through his playing career and his managerial one after that.

SAF is Manchester United personified, yet as he often admits in his bio, his achievements would never have been possible without the patience and belief extended to him by the Man United board (that also caused him no end of trouble). To appreciate this book, you need to have a lot of background knowledge and a definite interest in soccer. Arriving at Manchester United in 1986, he went on to accumulate 38 trophies, including five FA Cups, 13 Premier Leagues and two Champions Leagues. Barclay talked to Ferguson’s fellow managers, his former players, colleagues and commentators for the book and didn’t let his rather unsentimental view on his fellow countryman botch up what is one the best books on Ferguson. In the 11 seasons that followed, he would become the most successful manager in the club’s history winning eight Premier League Titles between 1992 and 2003.Undoubtedly moving when, for example, it recounts the manager's paternal pride in nurturing homegrown youthful talent, it reads like a succession of sporting back pages when it comes to settling scores with former colleagues and rivals in the game. So finally managed to read the book on Leading by Sir Alex Ferguson who lead Manchester United to become one of the most successful clubs in the history of the game. He would then go on a run winning a second continental title in 2008 and five Premier League titles between 2006 and 2013. Since I'm a lifelong Liverpool supporter I breathed a great sigh of relief when Sir Alex Ferguson (SAF) announced his retirement towards the end of the 2012-2013 season. If you like soccer, know who Alex Ferguson is, and likes autobiographies, then this is the book for you.
