However, the good news is that now everyone can enjoy what is essentially a boys film, but truly one of the great underrated films of all time. He plays the boxer with a sympathy and depth of soul that contrasts well with Caine, and the scenes with the two of them are excellent. Raging Bull is of course a masterpiece so there is no touching that, but if you are in the mood for a good comedy and just a flat out good movie I recommend it. However, the story does take a sinister turn that is a little unexpected given the initially frivolous nature of the script.

Boxing Synopsis James Woods plays Gabriel Caine, a con man fresh out of jail, Woods teams up with aging prizefighter "Honey" Roy Palmer (Louis Gossett Jr. I certainly didn`t have high expectations when it came to this disc, the film definitely passed me by the first time round, but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. They are cut short by Gillon, who notes that his son never entered the ring -– therefore, only nine fights have transpired.

It is a classic con, just like in many such films that have come before, and like them all, it depends on the mark being a thoroughly detestable chap to work. Two small edge tears on the bottom edge, crease from the left edge center up to the top edge, Otherwise Very Good!

The cons with twists and reveals are very satisfying and the boxing scenes are very well shot and add tempo bringing everything together for a very satisfying final act. Gillon moved him in as a county resident just before the bet rules were established, meaning that Hagan can legally fight. Caine discovers that Gillon's treachery (and his bank account) goes deeper than Diggstown people know. Roy Palmer was leaning against the ropes between each round in the first few fights; fighters don't do that, since it makes the arm muscles tense and sore. In the romantic comedy 'Bull Durham' (1988), seasoned baseball player (Kevin Costner) is assigned to coach a hot-shot newcomer (Tim Robbins).

It's far from a sure thing, though, since Gabe's fighter is "Honey" Roy Palmer (Gossett), a cranky, over-the-hill 48-year-old who has just come out of retirement. But it differs in that the style of the film is far from slick and sharp, it`s not about quick thinking or sleight of hand, indeed the story eschews any such plot contrivance in favour of exploiting the sheer avarice of Gillon. But just when all looks lost, Caine whistles at Torres, gets his attention, straightens his tie and does a thumbs-down gesture (copying a move Gillon did earlier). There are also some racial slurs that seem over the top compared to today’s standards but only help to highlight how villainous John Gillon and his goons are.

This is a fantastic movie particularly if you like boxing, it's very witty and I think one of woods best films that has unfortunately remained in the shadows. Buck Holland (played by former heavyweight boxing contender Rocky Pepeli), who puts up a good fight.

Palmer looks done for, but he gets new motivation after seeing Diggs, who is sitting courtside, move his hand slightly (which he interprets as a show of support). We are licensed though the major international studios to issue public and commercial non-theatrical screening licenses to the Republic of Ireland.His softer side only comes out when he’s trying to protect his son (Jim Caviezel) but even then his actions only help to showcase his flaws. Ex-con Gabriel Caine and partner Fitz cook up a plan to take rich Diggstown resident John Gillon for all he’s worth.
