About this deal

The lively and engaging books are matched exactly to the Little Wandle Progression and phases which are based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’. It comprises of classroom resources to support the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP and a range of phonic readers that together provide a consistent and highly effective approach to teaching phonics. Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. by SLT and scrutinised through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised assessment tracker, to narrow attainment gaps between different groups of children and so that any additional support for teachers can be put into place.

Each book also contains parent’s notes and a ‘retell the story’ activity to support children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. By the end of Year 1, children will have been taught all of the phonemes and graphemes in the English language and should be able to decode and read any word. Pupils are able to engage in discussions about plots and characters, recommend a book to a peer and evaluate an author's use of language and the impact this has on the reader.Children in Reception are taught to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs, and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) with fluency and accuracy. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! It has enabled us to have training for everyone, offering a clear progression in phonics and reading and provision of what to do if children need extra support, through the Keep up, Catch up and SEND programs. the Rapid Catch-up fluency assessments when children are reading the Phase 5 set 3, 4 and 5 books for age 7+.

Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. Children need to practice and secure their phonic decoding skills until they become automatic and fluent readers. We choose these books carefully as we want children to experience a wide range of books, including books that reflect the children at Broomfield and our local community as well as books that open windows into other worlds and cultures.

This could be by showing pictures or objects with the sound in and getting the children to guess or find the sound.Reading notes within the book provide practical support for reading with children, including a list of all the sounds and words that the book will cover. Revisit and review – Go through flashcards or allow the children to play a quickfire game to practise something they have learned before and help build their confidence.
