About this deal

My son absolutely loves the How To Train Your Dragon movies and he finally decided that he wanted us to read the books together. It was later published in the United States in 2014 under the title How to Be a Viking, by Little, Brown and Company.

Many years later the author would develop the characters of Hiccup and Stoick further into her 12-Book series, geared toward middle-aged and young teen children. This is Cressida Cowell's first story of any kind relating to the How to Train Your Dragon Book series, and is about the relationship between father and son. Poor little Hiccup--he doesn't exactly fit in to everyone's idea of the big and fearsome Viking, with his tiny frame and delicate, polite attitude. Kids do see adults as wise people who are scared of nothing, and it's good for kids to look up to their parents, but it's also good to show them our weakness sometimes.

I never even knew it started with a picture book, so imagine my surprise when I saw this title from Cassandra Cowell in the picture book section. This wonderfully witty fable will delight all those who have ever faced up to their worse fears and is destined to become a children's classic. Upon seeing that Vikings can get sick and scared, Hiccup starts to feel better and navigates the ship back home, past many marvelous creatures of the sea. It's a sweet read, has some excellent lessons, and makes for an interesting early insight into how Hiccup differs from the rest of the vikings, even as a little boy. I liked the introduction by Cowell, about how this is what started her crazy journey with the How to Train Your Dragon series.

It is the story of Hiccup's first time out to sea where he goes to find out if vikings are ever frightened. He never really seemed scared at all of the sea once he was out there, and because his fear was never really shown or explained, it felt hard to believe this fact about him or care that he overcame it to be a hero. How to Train Your Dragon has been one of my favorite stories sense before I could read, when my sister and I would listen to the silly voices narrated on our boom box. We both love love Cressida Cowell's adorable illustrations, and while I appreciate the story as Hiccup's first step to a greater destiny of being able to overcome fear to do what must be done, my son just likes a little boy like him who is brave, and the hero of the story. Hiccup, afraid of going to sea with his heroic viking father, Stoick the Vast, learns all of this from his seafaring adventure.

The art is very much the same as in Cressida's other works (obviously, since she is the illustrator as far as I'm aware), so it does feel like a part of the httyd series/universe.

Until, that is, Hiccup, despite his increasing seasickness, is forced to save the day when all the other Vikings turn out not to be quite as tough as they thought. This was actually the first book that started the phenomenal series of 12 books titled HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. An excellent sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, this highly amusing adventure story with a dash of toilet humour is perfect reading for boys and girls alike aged 8-12. Hiccup, The Viking Who Was Sick is an hilarious, heartwarming tale about a little boy facing his fears and getting to grips with the things he hates the most.Stoick and Hiccup greet Old Wrinkly on the shore and all realize that yes, Vikings sometimes get scared, but they deal with it, which is what Bravery is.

Hiccup, The Viking who was Seasick (also titled Hiccup the Seasick Viking in 2000) is a large book designed for small children. At first I thought what are the odds that there is another Viking kid with the name of Hiccup who is afraid only to realise at the end of the book that this is the same Hiccup that the movie is based on.Simpatična pričica koja je svojevrsni prequel knjizi Kako izdresirati zmaja, u kojoj upoznajemo Štucavca dok je još bio mali Viking kojeg je bilo strah ploviti morem. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Unlike his dad, Stoick the Vast, Hiccup is tiny, thoughtful and polite and scared of almost everything - especially of going to sea for the very first time. Very sweet little book about a kid who is worried he won't be a very good Viking, he is due to go to sea for the first time and he is terrified. I suppose the trip is supposed to show how Hiccup overcomes his fear; that although scared, he steers the ship back to safety when others aren't able to.
