About this deal

One of these is Cole’s 12-year-old son, Miles, whom Cole must protect at all costs—considering what nefarious minds, like her sister’s, might do with a boy immune to the virus—and so they go on the lam, Miles going as Mila, hoping to get home to Johannesburg.

A second fundamental fact is that the system of globalized trade and supply chains that we’ve constructed over the past few decades is extremely complex and finely tuned.Oh yes, I understand 🙂 I did enjoy the whole story to be honest, it’s just that ending became a bit too much of a narrative on how humans affect the planet for me, lol.

Three or four decades from now, I predict, we will not find our world shattered into a pastiche of isolated regional economies, separated by oceans full of pirates and marauding neocolonialist empires. We are in the middle right now of an attempted worldwide oligarchic push to reinstall feudalism, the dismally-failed governance model that dominated 99 percent of societies on six continents for 6,000 years,” he told EW. We need to think about how to deal with this, and many of Zeihan’s suggestions seem directionally correct. This is not usually discussed as a post-apocalyptic novel, and indeed it depends on how you read it, but let me present my case: if you take the narrator’s word for it, she is the last woman alive on earth, typing along to keep herself occupied, with no hope of ever encountering another soul again. There is very little swearing in this book although the occassional s swear word in English and a swear word in Japanese is used a few times. Despite the compelling, experimental prose, parts of this feel like a horror novel, but unlike most of the books on this list, it ends on a note of hope, which makes it a particularly good one to read right now. Back in time stories are hard to do well because anything you change can effect the likeability of the story or the characters.

So I read it — well, OK, I listened to it on Audible, which I would definitely recommend, since Zeihan narrates his own book in a highly entertaining manner. I loved reading something I wouldn’t normally that I really enjoyed and having the excitement of opening things along the way which all made me really smile. The collective behind it embodies the very politics necessary to win a just transition that is worthy of the name: Indigenous-led, internationalist, rooted in solidarity, and crackling with moral clarity. Not perfect but the good parts I loved, the great parts dazzled me and filled me with joy, reminding me how wonderful it is to have creative thoughts about the everyday world we live in that skew it in fantastic ways. A childhood obsession with the World Book Encyclopedia is here transformed into a "novel" (which it is only in the loosest sense of the term) filled with whimsical entries which range from autobiographical sketches, memories, musings, odes, conjectures and "histories" all neatly arranged, encyclopedia style, by key terms. I enjoy the author's other books, but this one would have worked much better as a straight cultivation story instead of a resurrection story. Of course this all blows up in his face and he hastens the death of even more people but it’s all for the greater good so it’s fine! This book follows the same story line as a hundred others, and doesn't really do anything special or new. Charleston looks, too, at the Hopi people of the American Southwest, whose sacred stories tell them they were created for a purpose. Walker gives readers characters to believe in and a new – albeit terrifyingly broken – world to root for.

Marianne is one of the Professors, and lives in a literal ivory tower with her father—until she sneaks out to experience life as a Barbarian.
