About this deal

Dorothy Koomson always knows how to pull her readers into a storyline and keep you completely wrapped up in the protagonist’s lives. So this is first for my with this author but I've heard lots of great things about her so when I got the offer of an early read I thought I'd take the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and I can now completely understand why she is so highly rated.

As the reader gets to know more about modern-day Cleo, we are also taken back twenty-five years to when Cleo was a university student.I won’t say any more as I don’t want to put spoilers in this review but trust me, this is such a unique story – I haven’t read a thriller with something similar, so good! Usually, this would be a positive for me as I prefer to be shocked than for a story to go down the obvious route, but I did feel slightly let down when a new twist came into play. The main character was likeable and her story was heartbreaking, the story was good and really well written, as are all of Dorothy Koomson's books. Past and present woven together in this take of a successful Black woman novelist who has had a tv show made of one of her books. Things really start to fall apart, though, when someone tries to frame her murder – in the same ways as the crimes she makes up.

I have to admit the start of the book is confusing, you’re thinking how it’s going to play out but also what’s going to happen.Proudly announcing that TEA BOOKS is new Serbian publisher of Dorothy Koomson :) I fell in love with Dorothy's writing with her book "My Best Friend's Girl" and I became her first Serbian editor. Managing to build a new life for herself with Wallace, she begins to live her dream, but this soon turns into a nightmare and Cleo is convinced that Heath is back, watching her and doing his very best to harm those people who mean the most to her. Overall, it was a really good read and if you like the slow simmering burner style of books then this one is for you. Hello, my name's Dorothy Koomson and I'll try to make this bit that's all about me as interesting as possible.

I love tying together the hints I’ve seen in the present day plot with things going on in the past as more and more gets revealed.I appreciated how the theme of obsession was used throughout, but I just wanted to see more from a certain character.

Despite all of this, the pacing of the story did throw me off a bit as it didn't really hook me until a good half way through and because of this it made the big twists, turns and ending feel quite rushed. Writing is all she’s ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination.Dorothy was featured on the 2021 Powerlist as one of the most influential Black people in Britain and appeared in GQ Style as a Black British trailblazer. She touches on the racism that Black people still face but without making it a major plot point or using it as some kind of lesson for the characters.
