About this deal

The park is popular with dog walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers and with dedicated routes for each, everyone has the chance to enjoy their own space in the tranquil woodland. Ahead of the species accounts is a brief but fascinating history of rare bird recording from pre-19th century through to the modern day, charting the change from ‘procurement’ of specimens, to increased field recording, and ever-improving knowledge and technology. Suspect records include Gyr Falcon Falco rusticolus, White’s Thrush Zoothera aurea and Pine Grosbeak Pinicola enucleator, all claimed as seen or collected in Hampshire but, following a review by Hampshire Ornithological Society, not admitted to the county list.

A Species that have been recorded in an apparently natural state at least once since 1 January 1950.

This tranquil heathland is home to some very special wildlife such as nightjars, tree pipits, woodlarks and silver-studded blue butterflies. House Martins and Swallows also working same field, and a Grey Wagtail back and forth under the bridge. I should add that I was travelling as a passenger and not driving the car whilst all this sky-gazing was going on! Key information is given on the habitat of each site, the birds likely to be seen there, season by season, with tips on the best time to go for maximum enjoyment.

You could put up a poster advertising my site in your local youth club or drop in centre if you like. Lowland heath still faces significant threats that put pressure on the specialised wildlife that rely on a fragile habitat. Receive our free weekly newsletter which includes our popular Photo of the Week and Review of the Week features, plus competitions, special offers and much more.
