About this deal

The originals were better at this point I am tired of bad dumb choices made during re-mix of what were great mixes. From “Taxman” to “Tomorrow Never Knows,” The Beatles’ REVOLVER has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and Sam Okell, and sourced directly from the original four-track master tapes with audio brought forth in stunning clarity with the help of cutting-edge technology developed by the award-winning sound team at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd. The problem for the band, even though they didn’t tell me at the time, was that the music was getting far ahead of what pop music was in those days,” he says. If there is a certificate we’ve missed out on then it’s probably for a 50 metre swim badge at the local swimming baths. My biggest fear going into hearing this Revolver set was there might be some sort of harsh, crunchy digital edge to the production.

Spinning popular music off its axis and ushering in a vibrant new era of experimental, avant-garde sonic psychedelia, Revolver brought about a cultural sea change and marked an important turn in The Beatles' own creative evolution. You realized that everybody was living separately, they didn’t play live anymore, so all they did was meet in the studio. It was remixed back in 1999 for the “Yellow Submarine Songtrack”, and that mix was a revelation, the first time the strings were truly freed from being shackled together. I knew I had to do something that was way out, looking into the future, opening people to different kinds of attitudes in life. The Revolver box set of course showcases the Grammy-winning original album artwork created by The Beatles’ longtime friend, German bassist, artist — and, for some of the solo-era Beatles, future musical collaborator — Klaus Voormann.

And I’m not just talking about core Revolver tracks like “Tomorrow Never Knows” — which is a landmark in its own right — but also amazing songs like “She Said She Said,” where the lift of his drumming is just magnificent. Saved my life — or my soul, at least — as a teen in England in the ’80s, and still think it’s the best ever 37. There are exceptions – the horn section on “Got to Get You Into My Life”, the strings on “Eleanor Rigby”. While software that could separate instruments had been previously used on the Live at the Hollywood Bowl re-release in 2016, there was a world of difference between using this software with poorly recorded live performances smothered in fans’ screams versus using it with pristinely recorded studio tapes where it would be considerably more obvious if it didn’t work well.Check out what an immersive experience “Yellow Submarine” has become – it has been remixed twice before, but never before have you felt the waves washing over you in the first verse, or found yourself in the center of a dinner party where “our friends are all aboard”, complete with clinking glasses and casual laughter. Between the murky sounds of the slowed tape and the swirly effects on the vocal, it’s always been a challenge get at what’s all happening in the song.

Once again, Ringo takes center stage, revealing his incredible process in crafting the drum parts for not only “Tomorrow Never Knows,” but also “And Your Bird Can Sing” and “She Said She Said. Curiously, the two Sessions discs had none of that dust, which leads me to think they may have been made by different team in the production chain.Got To Get You Into My Life does have incredible horn clarity, but at the expense of what may be my favorite moment in the whole album: the guitar burst at the end. I’m sure there are some of you who are wondering how the new mono transfer of Revolver stacks up to prior versions — and before you ask, no, I’m not here to compare mono vs. Of course, a few of these were on the "Anthology" series back in the 90's, but many are unique to this set. In contrast, the new stereo mix strives to deliver a bit more of that balanced feel, akin to the original mono mix. Well, the Ramones were named after a Beatles-related Macca alias, after all—MM] And then, the tapes were slowed down for overdubs of vocals and such.

All the new Revolver releases feature the album’s new stereo mix, sourced directly from the original four-track master tapes. Revolver’s sweeping new Special Edition follows the universally acclaimed remixed and expanded Special Editions of Sgt.Wait until you hear the isolated stereo backing track for “Eleanor Rigby” on the Sessions discs — experiencing that string quartet isolated and in stereo is absolutely spinetingling and mesmerizing.
