About this deal

Once Maya finally admits to Aubrey the truth behind her relationship with Frank, Aubrey surprises her. She's afraid of him too. Just as the two girls begin to make connections, on that very day, Aubrey ends up dead.

Rounding up to three stars as feeling generous. While younger readers will love this, I think it was a bit meh and a tad too cute/tame.Trouble is I love the author from his many action thrillers; love his pacing, craft in setting out stories and ability to write 3D characters with real language and fresh ideas.

As the story progressed and all the characters were brought in and their stories were told I really started to enjoy it. I couldn't guess which way the story was going to go and was kept guessing right the way through. There were so many layers to unravel right up to the very last chapter and I loved this accepted) aspect.

Yvette Fielding Press Reviews

When I read the series to my middle child, she'd already seen the photos of her mother's and brother's Laura Ingalls adventures, and she was ready to don the bonnet and aprons, but I told her she needed to wait until her little sister had experienced the books and then we'd go together, as a family. I know that this was the second time reading this. I vividly remember the cover as the same one from elementary school. But before I re-read it, it would have been impossible for me to tell you anything about it. However, as our family got into it, I noticed some of the parts were very familiar. Apparently, I had retained a lot of the content, but my brain hadn’t filed it with any point of reference. I kept looking at my wife and kids while I was reading and saying, “Hey, I remember this!” After many years mourning the death of her friend Aubrey during high school, Maya decides to return to her hometown in the Berkshires to find out. A YouTube video has surfaced of a young woman sitting across from a man named Frank...the SAME man who was with Aubrey the night she died. In the video, this new woman appears to drop dead while her gaze is firmly trained on Frank.

I remembered what I was like as a teenager, nosy and up for an adventure. So the idea of a confident young girl, joined by two friends and her uncle, not forgetting her bulldog Boris (in real life he’s my dog, Watson, and has become part of my investigation team) was irresistible – and I loved writing about them as they began to unravel the secrets of the afterlife, whilst helping some lost souls on the way. So, why did I come away from this feeling "Well, that was a fun, easy read. A bit meh, but still, a nice easy read"? The main character is a former police officer , now a private investigator. He’s in the look for a big case and that comes in the form of the wife of a man who’s supposedly murdered his family on Christmas Eve while he will be the only one who’s to inherit the family’ possessions. I liked the general idea for this book, but not the execution. Here is a list of other things I wasn't a fan of:

About Yvette Fielding

After poltergeist activity at their home, Eve tells her scientist Uncle about what they did. He realises that he might know who the ghost is and what he wants, but it will take them all working together to put the ghost to rest. Many thanks to NetGalley, Dutton, and Ana Reyes for an ARC of this book! Now available as of 1.3!** PENGUIN GROUP Dutton and Ana Reyes provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for January 03, 2023. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine. Then there is Eva’s uncle Rufus, who is just his own very special character. His inventions are actually really good, and I do wonder if they could work in the real-world.. well some of them, some of them are little far out there.

I enjoyed this book and thought it was a unique premise. The story centers on Maya, whose best friend Aubrey died suddenly while with the guy Maya was dating named Frank. There is something weird and creepy about Frank that Maya can’t put her finger on, but she is convinced he had something to do with the death. 7 years later she sees a video posted online where another woman seemingly just keels over and dies while also in Frank’s presence and Maya knows she has to get to the bottom of what Frank is doing to these people. This past week marked my youngest child's first exposure to the series, (this book being the perfect selection, also, for our “Wisconsin” entry of our Kids Read Across America project). I was able to listen to a final version as well. Although the narrator was fine there was not a heads up when we were in the past, I like a heads up. Wayyy too many POVs, which is somewhat explained by the book seeming to have an all-knowing narrator/POV, but it's not done very well. The first three chapters take place within the same time frame, but from different POVs. This book was incredibly spooky! The storyline was definitely a whirlwind of ghostly encounters and spine tingling creepiness. It feels so real that you find it hard to separate the book and what you’re reading to you’re own reality (maybe that’s just me because I live with very mischievous poltergeist).I have had my own experiences with ghosts so I really enjoyed reading this book with paranormal activity, as this is something that excites me. When I get the opportunity I love nothing more than reading a good ghost novel. I believe in the unique abilities of human brain and how it could be manipulated but some parts of the explanations about events seem a little illogical for me! Clovis of course scoffs at the whole thing, but when finally huddled around the Ouija board, with their fingers on the glass in the centre, they call on any ghosts nearby. It's not long before they wish they hadn't. Being obsessed with Most Haunted and having watched every single episode, I was always going to buy a book written by Yvette Fielding but I honestly didn't expect it to be this frightening! I also love abandoned buildings and could genuinely imagine me creeping round the house they find in Epping Forest, and that's going to play on my mind every time I go into one again! I think Yvette's real experiences kinda influence this story too and I liked that, as it made it more real. Mark Dawson has all the skills. A great thriller writer on the top of his game." - Sunday Times bestselling crime and mystery author Steve Cavanagh
