The story combines flashbacks giving the history of Pen and Cara's complex and tumultuous relationship with details of the various ways Pen feels and responds to grief, the reactions of people who do or don't know the nature of the relationship, Pen's feelings about lesbians in Ireland, and several decisions to come out to those close to her.

Her idiosyncratic, wry humour permeates everything she does, creating books of style and irresistible charm. Branches grow outwards and mask the light, to the point that it becomes harder to see the light of day and you become lost, lost in a forest of denial.

This was a great read and highlighted quite a lot of things we take from granted when choosing a grad school or life in general. It gives the reader lots to think about and what to expect or prepare for when considering a doctoral program.
