About this deal

As the video below shows, receiving downlink signals from Coriolis with the rig wasn’t all that difficult.

And like the original, version two is absolutely stuffed with sensors and diagnostic gear — a Hack RF SDR for radio work, plus an Analog Discovery 2 which provides everything from an oscilloscope and signal generator to a spectrum analyzer and an impedance tester. The third video is not yet released, but is due to premier on YouTube in 10 hours from the time of this post. It is sufficient to send a signal over the laboratory bench to a receiver, nothing more should happen. A. Petazzoni] recently put together a detailed blog post about installing and using MAYHEM on the HackRF/PortaPack, complete with a number of real-world examples that show off just a handful of possible applications for the project. This is a fun device and if your into poking around with RF and want to talk back as well as receive I highly recommend this device.

It's still got the SDR hallmark "center spike", but that's to be expected, and can easily be corrected for. Other than to initially pick a HF band you that want to work you really shouldn’t use a 20 Mhz wide ‘window’ to work a band that’s only a few hundred khz wide. Without ever plugging into a computer, this firmware allows you to receive, decode, and re-transmit a dizzying number of wireless protocols. If he had lowered the receive window bandwidth to a more reasonable width to fit the band of interest he likely wouldn’t be getting those images.

But if you are looking for a quick and universal introduction to amateur radio, you should better choose a conventional radio and gain first experiences with it. For assistance with HackRF general use or development, please look at the issues on the GitHub project. The palm-sized, short-throw projector would be perfect for an impromptu combat briefing in an improvised command post, or just watching Netflix. Well, for the average user, SDR devices are capable of doing tons of different kind of things like amateur radio usage to communicate with your friends (be wary of local regulation regarding transmitting RF!The hardware was developed by Michael Ossmann (USA) as an open source device, backed by a strong Kickstarter funding project. Despite the distortion, seeing the planet’s surface via the microwaves emitted by water vapor is still pretty cool. If you were to try to redesign the RF section on HackRF One to support full-duplex, the main thing to focus on would be the MAX2837 (intermediate frequency transceiver).
