About this deal

My question is: Who does turn their PC off pressing the button ??? I havent pressed that button for years, i use "shut down" in Windows menu. When using hibernation, the resume process is slower than sleep, but it helps you conserve more battery. The 'high' wire is connected to the collector and the ground wire is connected to the emitter of the transistor. (emitter & collector connections corrected - thanks to cosax for pointing this out). A post with a diagram can be found here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 46#p446346 I get to work at 9 Am and wanted to access it, I guess something has failed and I cant and im not home for another few hours (I know, first world problems and all...). There you go, two simple methods to turning on your ATX power supply without having it connected to a motherboard. Being able to do this has been extremely helpful to me as a reviewer, however it also comes in handy if you run a high power Thermoelectric Cooler (aka TEC or pelt) that requires the use of a 2nd PSU.

Power SW to 6 and 8 (doesn't matter which way, the pins are just shorted when you press the power button). As most of you probably know, you cannot simply plug in a PSU to the wall and turn it on. The PSU needs a connection to the motherboard to be told to turn on. When you press the power button on your case, it jumps the green wire to a ground, telling the PSU to turn on. When this “jump” is broken, the PSU shuts off. Most magnetic switches are either normally open or normally closed, but some offer both options depending on how they’re connected to the circuit. If your PC won’t turn on but motherboard light is on, a potential culprit is the power button on the case itself or the wires connecting that button to the motherboard. The junction of the two resistors will be at 2.5V which will be read as a ON or high by a gpio port set as an input. Excellent for sleek low-key mods, a magnetic switch can be completely hidden inside the case, and turned on manually with a magnet. Momentary" Toggle Switch replaces Main Power or Reset switch on PC. Type: On/Off 2 Pin Wire Connection. Power: 125V, 20 AMPS

The circuit consists of the gpio pin connected to the base of the transistor through a 2K2 resistor and a 10K resistor connected between the base and ground. The 10K resistor ensures that the transistor is non-conducting, until the gpio is pulled high. If it has failed then either add the reset code to this script or call a separate script to do the reset (my preference as it's easier to debug).I really want to do this without any extra hardware at all, just a Pi and the necessary connecting wires. Really hope some of the forum experts can lend a hand If you use sudo crontab -e you will access the root crontab and any scripts started from it will be run as root. One of the most popular case mods we're asked about is how to change y our computer's Main Power Switch with a Military style Fighter Pilot switch. Momentary SPST (Single Pole, Single Throw) Switch - Your most basic momentary switch, press/flip/turn it to close the circuit, release and it opens. Completely ruling out any of those hardware problems is its own troubleshooting workflow. If you have the luxury of spare parts, now is the time to swap them in for your previously installed components and see if that helps. Testing with a different motherboard can be more challenging, as you have to reinstall the CPU and cooler (assuming they are compatible), but having spare hardware is the easiest way to troubleshoot.
