About this deal

So intense was the drama, the race came to be known as ‘Iron War’ – the single most awe-inspiring sporting event ever witnessed. This year’s Ironman World Championship will mark the 30th anniversary of the classic battle between Dave Scott and Mark Allen—a battle that gained global media attention and went down in history as one of the greatest races ever.

While Fitzgerald absolutely did not convince me this was the greatest race ever, nor even in the top ten, this is a good read for anyone who is a fan of endurance racing of any variety. There are many sound bites that imply that to succeed in triathlon, you just have to be mentally tough. He (Allen) pictured himself running next to Dave in the race’s final moments and considered that, in such a scenario, this spot represented his last best chance to make a winning move. But they shaped the world of triathlon and helped make it popular, especially Scott, arguably the first person to really race an Ironman, as opposed to just trying to survive to the finish line.Matt Fitzgerald is an award-winning endurance sports journalist and bestselling author of more than 20 books on running, triathlon, fitness, nutrition, and weight loss, including Brain Training for Runners and Racing Weight. Both men had humble athletic beginnings and worked incredibly hard to earn their positions on the world's greatest triathlon stage. It's not just about the 'race' but also 2 very different training styles, 2 very different people and 2 very different approaches to training.

Emma-Kate Lidbury (she/her) is an endurance sports journalist, former managing editor at Triathlete, and co-author of Triathlon Swimming. For instance, Allen using Phil Maffetone's go slower to go faster low heartrate focus on aerobic workouts, was very interesting, and I have more to learn about that.

It is great writing, great storytelling and a good historical record…It belongs on every triathlete's reading list. The 1989 Ironman World Championship is widely considered the most epic race in Ironman history, if not all of endurance sport.

Nothing against Seth Michael Donsky, but I don't think his narration style was the best for this book.I had already completed my first ironman prior to reading this but I had no idea of the real history of the sport.
