White is working on the same problems in this book as the ones he gives Arthur, and he's doing his best to learn by thinking like his animals. There was a section near the middle of the book that was almost too sad for me to handle, and I had to quit reading it for a couple of weeks. You would also love James’s job – if you had the head for heights and the physical and mental stamina.Cockerell “discerned a character he would like to add to his collection of acquaintances, and invited him for a visit to Kew. You can read it as an investigation into the nature of freedom, of education, power, war, history, class, enslavement, the English landscape and the workings of the human heart… In our present age of terrible environmental destruction, it can be read most usefully as a book about humanity’s lamentable inability to see nature as anything other than a mirror of ourselves.
