About this deal

James can find relief with his beloved Nan, she’s been having worrying falls, and James can’t tell anyone, or she might be sent to a faraway care home. I suppose Glitter Boy was my way of dealing with that period in my life and right some wrongs, whilst also offering hope for a new generation of LGBTQ+ youngsters who may be experiencing the same thing. Glitter Boy tells the story of Jamie, a Year 6 pupil who has a passion for Mariah Carey, dancing and singing in the school choir. James can find relief with his beloved Nan, she's been having worrying falls, and James can't tell anyone, or she might be sent to a faraway care home. James worries about Nan, who keeps having falls, and he can’t talk to his dad, who’s silent and sad since Mum left.

For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms - but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation. Such tales have convinced many scholars that Glitter Boys were a gift left behind by the godlike Neernans to be found by worthy heroes of later generations. This is one of those “I want to give you a hug” books and I’m so glad I’ve had the pleasure of reading it. Each round of boom gun ammunition contains two hundred 5mm diameter flechettes which are expelled sequentially. It’s a heartwarming and often moving story about learning to not just be yourself but to help others become more tolerant and accepting of those who are different.

But also there was such an important message about acceptance and unconditional love, important relationships in a child's life and antics on the playground.

The struggles of day to day school life mixed with finding your place in the world is so well crafted that you can feel James dissecting every feeling he has.

While he faces a cadre of bullies at school, he also has a circle of supportive friends, and a teacher who is both a role model and a support. What I love about this, is that it highlights how someone so bright and bubbly can be dragged down due to such an internal struggle when they feel like they have no support. Your previous titles include some wonderful, inclusive picture books but Glitter Boy is your first (and hopefully not last) middle grade book. The GB only has a 90-degree cone of fire and his feet are firmly stuck in the ground, so the big edge here is mobility.A lot of hope was placed on the Boom gun because it was also meant for the next generation of tank-busting aircraft, for the USA's next generation main battle tank and the US Navy's next medium calibur deck gun. For kids who are queer or questioning, it's boldly affirming; for those who aren't, as well as parents and teachers, it gently offers insight into other people's experiences. The boom gun is as practical as an acid spitting codpiece and you could never, EVER sneak up on someone wearing 1. At school, he finds himself the victim of bullying by Paul (who is very good at football and already wears Lynx Africa) who taunts him at every opportunity. James can find relief with his wonderful Nan, but she’s been having worrying falls, and James can’t tell anyone, or she might be sent to a care home.
