About this deal

Secondly this story seems to labour under the inevitability of the failure of Corax's goal to rebuild his legion, A 40k nut like me who knows the background fluff inside out knows very well the outcome and therefore there's very little surprise. Wer allerdings epische Schlachten wie in 'Battle Of The Space Marines' sucht wird allerdings sein Glück woanders suchen müssen. They're rescued thanks to the psychic vision of an Imperial Guard commander who, frankly, brings nothing to this story, and whose every scene could have been cut.

The rating is a little harsh, but at some stage I have to distinguish between the books that will stick in my head, and those that won't. His most popular works include The Sundering trilogy, the Path of the Eldar, works from the Horus Heresy series including Deliverance Lost, the audio dramas Raven’s Flight and Honour to the Dead, and the New York times best-selling novella The Lion. I've been waiting to read this installment of the Horus Heresy for years, and it didn't let me down. Minor characters were all sufficiently interesting, they stood out from oneanother , not always a given when discussing space marines. As the Horns Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V. This book had action, it had cloak-and-dagger spy shit, it had the asshole Alpha Legion, it had a lot of the science behind the gene-enhancing, and it had one of the more expansive single book stories so far in this series.

He ends up disconnected from the actual proceedings and appears to put a lot of pressure on his captains over it. Corax goes to his father, who grants him the ability to rebuild the Raven Guard quickly, only if Corax can figure the memories his father shared with him. Gav Thorpe's stuff is always worth a read, at least in my opinion and he manages to humanize Space Marines in a way that some authors struggle with. The Alpha legionaries undercover in the Raven Guard disrupt the rebuilding process and damage the gene-tech Corax had uncovered. Being a primarch of the Raven Guard and a son of the Emperor and having some of his abilities, I would think it would be easy to detect spies or at least take the possibilities of spies into account. Then they are sidelined throughout the rest of the Horus Heresy as they lack the numbers to meaningfully influence events. This was the first novel that features the Raven Guard as the main characters, and previously Corax had only briefly appeared in past books - during the events of the Dropsite Massacre. The (very) good Warhammer books punch you in the face with unrelenting bolter fire then end before you realized that there wasn't that much story or what was wasn't actually very good. He keeps making demands of the apothecary and magos working on the gene-tech that are unreasonable and too much, too quickly, and when Branne confronts him about the rash, overzealous nature of the first batches of Raptors, Corax gets significantly angry and shrugs it all off - instead of listening to the sound advice of his senior staff, he wants to expand the recruitment instead of doing a thorough job, to hit some arbitrary goals he set for his Legion. The exception to this is the involvement of the Alpha Legion and their sabotage of the project, which is interesting but as with the main story just piqued my desire for information on what happens to the Raven Guard and the Alpha Legion after the events of this book.

Tending to their wounds, the bloodied Space Marines endeavour to replenish their numbers and take the fight to the traitor Warmaster. Deliverance Lost, by Gav Thorpe, is about the rebuilding of Corvus Corax’s legion, the XIX Legion Raven Guard, after the betrayal from his brother Horus and a number of his other brothers at, what is known as, The Dropsite Massacre. As usual this is a Heresy story that balances on a knife edge between hope and tragedy and while you suspect what's going to happen, you are never quite sure. Being a fan of Warhammer 40k and the Raven Guard in general, learning more about the Raven Guard was interesting. Finally, finally we have a coherent plot from conception to execution, with each step reasonably explained. There are attempts at intrigue and mystery and "unexpected" plot twists but they almost always fell flat for me.
