About this deal

The modern player's tool features a host of essential connectivity options to function perfectly with almost any players set up. Each track is independently controllable, so finding the right settings for each individual loop is made easy. Process your tracks and external-input signals with the RC-300's expressive onboard effects, including Transpose, Flanger, Phaser, Modulator, vocal effects, and more. Bernhoft was using the RC-50 Loopstation, which was already discontinued, so I looked for a good alternative.

Although the Gibson Echoplex (formerly the Oberheim Echoplex) had a hell of a lot of amazing features but you needed two of them for stereo (a necessity in my case). A dedicated knob lets you adjust the volume of the rhythm, and you can set the tempo incrementally or via tap tempo.I've never used this setting much myself, but while both the 50 and 300 can be set to fade out a loop at its end, only the 50 can fade in. It's also equipped with pro effects, a master Expression pedal, and a deluxe, ultra-wide control panel for the ultimate in live-performance manipulation. To keep your loops tight and in time, you can play along with one of the cool rhythm patterns in the RC-300’s onboard library as you record; the Loop Quantize feature helps you having your recordings looped in time.

My only gripe is the need to reach for a rotary knob to switch to another preset, which is not as efficient and can be awkward looking on stage. The RC-300’s ultra-wide pedalboard is equipped with an Expression pedal (which can be assigned to a variety of parameters) and enlarged footswitches for controlling REC/PLAY and STOP for each track. I am more actively suspicious of the unit now, but my daydreaming brain says "Hey man; You're savvy - You fix stuff all the time. The “Auto Recording” feature starts recording the moment you begin playing your instrument, or as soon as you start a connected audio player. So for example, you could have an entire 12-bar blues loop ready -- after recording 1 bar -- if you're willing to push this feature to its limits. So, meanwhile it sucks a little to change my routines for almost working pieces from 'sooperlooper' controlled with a FCB1010 over to the '300. I'm not too keen on the sound quality of the transpose effect, but I am happy with its modulation effects, especially the chorus and tremolo.

There is still no way to go straight into overdub when activating a track that already has a recording on it. With an FX library featuring flanger, phaser, tremolo, delay, and chorus effects ( plus many more to boot! Another feature that I found useful is Tempo Sync, which ensures that tracks are in sync with each other. While this is not optimal, it's not a bad solution for me since the Phrase-specific Undos are only important to me when I'm not currently using the track, anyway. I started off looping on the Boss RC-30 and much prefer its bigger pedals however, I have gotten used to the smaller scale pedals now.Measuring 536 x 231 x 76 mm and with a weight of 3,9 kg, the Boss Loop Station is everything but a small, handy toy. As well as clever 'Auto Recording' and 'Count in' modes you can also undo and redo on the go with the seemingly endless 3 hour loop time! In preparation, we had to study the manual - but after a few weeks of using the device, we knew exactly how to work with it.

So if you want to record that Overdub all the way to the end of Phrase 1 right before starting a Recording on another Phrase, you have to try to tap the new Phrase at the very last possible moment so you lose as little of that Overdub as possible. While there are newer options available, the RC-300 is still very much capable of meeting my looping needs - and it does so without having to cost me another limb. Bear in mind that this model came out about about 5 years ago, but it's still very good - some might seek more recent technology although I can't imagine many functions that could be added. But the long and the short of it is that while the RC-50 maxed out at 4 assignable control buttons, the RC-300 has 8, provided you use a Midi pedal that sends CC messages. Also make sure of course that your midi cables are setup properly with the Master out going to the Slave in. Of course I mean the second delay that comes after the undo is activated, not the 2 second hold part).
