About this deal

Potentially one of the OM System’s/Olympus’ 100-400mm’s biggest selling points is its compatibility with the firm’s MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters.

Pay4Later Limited is registered in England and Wales (company number 06447333) and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (register number 728646). Given the lens’s slower maximum aperture, you’d expect a more portable alternative from OM Digital here.

Add in Olympus' well-respected image stabilization technology, and you have some serious telephoto performance in your hands! When tracking birds in flight, I would often switch to the "6m-infinity" limited mode to help prevent the continuous AF from shifting wildly off-base if, or rather when, I lost track of the subject and my AF points moved over blank blue sky. The thin body constructed by metal, constructed of rich 6 elements in 3 groups (1 HR lens) promises virtually no image degradation. Both are easy enough to find by touch—their textures differ, the zoom ring has a rough diamond finish. some of you have the Olympus 100-400mm lens already and have shot quite a bit with the lens, please share your thoughts and experience using the lens!

But I was less happy with the images I got in even moderately low light, where the requirement for very high ISOs means that it’s difficult to capture much fine detail. If you need portability and telephoto pulling power, the Micro Four Thirds format is an appealing option.I used ISO800 to 1000 for quite a few shots, and this degraded the image quality, images appear softer, not as sharp as they could have been if I lowered the ISO numbers, and they look flatter with less contrast. Nonetheless, the image stabilization system here with the 100-400mm doesn't feel as powerful or as smooth as the 300mm f/4 IS Pro in my opinion. What we were told, however, is that the lens didn't get the "Pro" moniker likely due to its variable aperture design.

As tends to be the case with telezooms, it’s slightly weaker at 400mm than at 100mm, particularly towards the corners of the frame, where it benefits from being stopped down to f/8. This switch will lock the lens at its 100mm position, and while I didn't experience any "lens creep" while using the lens, it's a handy feature to have; as the lens ages, the zoom mechanism might loosen and the lens could extend outward on its own. A Focus Limiter switch boosts AF capability, helping you track and capture moving subjects with ease.

The lens is already front-heavy at 100mm, and at 400mm it extends out from the camera by a full foot. I did not mind and left the collar because it made holding it more comfortable actually (I have big hands).
