About this deal

In all other cases the Auctioneer will remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller within seven days of the receipt by the Auctioneer of the total sum due. This is not because of a lack of general index per se (which nevertheless is a bit shameful of the British Library) but because of a lack of any reference point to the pages of the Luttrell Psalter itself. It has more than 600 pages and the delicate task of recreating this masterpiece of English medieval art so accurately into a complete full size facsimile edition has taken well over a year to achieve. The most valuable for the understanding of medieval life are the dozens of scenes of farming, hunting, entertainment and music-making.

Full-size color reproduction of the entire original document, Luttrell Psalter: the facsimile attempts to replicate the look-and-feel and physical features of the original document; pages are trimmed according to the original format; the binding might not be consistent with the current document binding. The lyrics are written in clear Gothic letters, which are preceded by a gorgeous “D” initial with two grotesques set among thorny tendrils against a golden background, which is in turn set within a golden square with a patterned blue background. The volume also contains a 64-page scholarly commentary by leading medieval manuscripts expert Michelle P. Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276–1345), who leant the manuscript his name as its patron, was a high-ranking English nobleman, Baron, knight, and a large landowner.a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. Examples from pages of the work of artists one to four are given, but I found the argument difficult to follow. The Luttrell Psalter is exceptional for the inventiveness and number of its humorous and charming decorations.

c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot without reserve by auction or by private treaty and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses. c) Any liability of the Auctioneer for any claim arising from loss or damage of any kind in respect of goods whether caused by negligence or otherwise including any claims for compensation will be limited to the amount of insurance cover effected in accordance with the provisions of clause 11. Brown's engaging narrative traces the inspiration and creation of the book, identifying its forebears while elucidating its originality. References in the text are made to pages in the psalter, but how does one then seek out the illustration without having to go through the whole book from beginning to end in the hope that there is a reproduction somewhere of the relevant reference? Along with the Psalms, the book contains luxuriously illuminated pictures of saints and bible stories, and of rural life; farming, cooking, doctoring, spouses squabbling, musicians playing, etceteras. Issued in a clamshell container, with title label on spine, and the commentary in a hollow under the facsim. Depicting scenes of everyday rustic life with vibrant color and earthy wit, the Luttrell Psalter is a unique and vivid document of British culture in the 1320s. IN PERSON: If you want to experience the atmosphere of the Auction Room the best way to do this is always to turn up in person.

We also recommend that you leave an “emergency cover bid" in case we are unable to reach you by telephone). With over 600 extensively illuminated pages, the Luttrell Psalter depicts medieval life with lively images. It has been suggested that the emphasis of the manuscript on natural landscapes could be connected to the lands that Lord Luttrell might have often seen. Psalters were books for personal devotion containing a calendar, the Psalms, and additional prayers, collects, and the Office of the Dead, though the contents could vary depending on what the patron wished to be included. Brown also refers to a dog being depicted on several occasions as if the depictions are of the same animal: instead one dog is black, wears a white collar, and has a spindly tail; whilst the other referred to is red, has no collar, and has a stumpy tail.

Not only are the illustrations from this Psalter fascinating, the book itself is beautifully designed. At the very end of the book, the finer and more technical aspects are listed, such as provenance, textual contents, codicology and the artists with their division of labour. The major text divisions are demarcated with ten historiated initials and another thirty-nine smaller versions make further subdivisions.
