About this deal

And while Kiersten White has been more in Serena’s genres of fantasy and historical fiction, she has dabbled in horror now and again. In short: This place is terrifying and would have been equally so without the addition of a slightly demonic supernatural element. I spent the novel wondering about the new discoveries being made by the characters throughout the story. Lots of twists that keep you engaged and just the right amount of tension lurking in the background at all times.

whites only was on signs in the early years, heavily implied when such a thing became harder to officially declare. I read the original version of Hide last year when it released, and while I enjoyed it, I remember thinking it had a lot of facets that didn't translate well to a written novel and would have worked better in a visual medium, like a film or mini-series—or, lo and behold, a graphic novel! She excels at staying hidden and has been doing so her entire life, since the time the rest of her family were taken from her, and sees no reason why she should fail at doing so now. This book touches on racism, homophobia, classism, and more, as well as exploring themes of trauma, PTSD, and finding community, and I feel like each of these topics was well-handled in a novel of this length. Her attitude did get to wearing pretty thinly on me too, she wasn’t remotely likable so it was hard to root for her at all. She and 13 other young people are taken to an abandoned amusement park, where they're told they must hide during daylight hours and that the first two members of their group to be found every day will be out of the competition. Changing seasonally and featuring innovative, theatrical dishes presented with finesse, the tasting menu represents the very best HIDE has to offer.

It has been so long since I was so involved in a book that I was sad to see it end, and even longer since I have read a breathtaking yet horrifying book. For example, how the park was described created an elaborate visual for me and I was able to use it to bounce from place to place as the story continued. I think I had notions that this would be an all out horror-fest, a kind of mindless slasher story where just a couple of survivors are left scrabbling around trying to stay alive.
