The book has been revised since my eldest son started to learn, and the first few pages concentrate on getting a feel for musicality and rhythm, learning the parts of the violin, etc before staves, crotchets, quavers etc are introduced, which can sometimes be hard for a younger child to grasp. With tunes, quizzes and games, it covers introductory points such as how to hold the instrument and bow, though to notation and musical pieces in a range of styles.

The revised edition of Fiddle Time Scales 1 is brimming over with creative ideas and packed with imaginative and amusing. I am gradually integrating as much of this helpful material as I can into my 'normal' teaching even though pupils may be using a different book; it should I feel, be highlighted and held up as a shining example of 'best practice' within instrumental teaching training courses. All pieces can be played with piano accompaniment, and some also have a violin accompaniment and chords for guitar. However the CD that comes with it, despite saying fiddle time starters on the cd, has the cello time starters tracks so we can not tune the violin to the tracks as described.
