About this deal

Unless there is some issue with yours, or your other headphones have a serious midrange / treble spike with hardly any bass at all (all pretty unlikely), it is pretty hard to tell what your issue is. The DT 880 PRO is a set of semi-open over-ear headphones, with a matte chrome finish on the back, and a matte black finish on the metal ear forks and band.

It looks identical but the 880's are more "plush" to the touch, even more so than the more expensive HD 600. The T50RP for me was a bit aggressive and a little too unforgiving in this regard, while the HD 600 was a bit of the opposite. Unless you plan to go portable with this headphone, in which case there are much better options for that purpose. The treble boosts in the DT 990 and DT770 are peaky, and the bass of the DT 990 is somewhat boomy to the careful ear, with a broad peak around 60 Hz.

However, as we move higher up the frequency range we see the massive boost that’s characteristic of nearly all Beyerdynamic models. That DT880 is shown as a current model along side the DT770 and DT990 in a brochure I have from 1989.If so, at 1 volt, this would be 111 dB for the 32 Ω version, 102 dB for the 250 Ω version and 98 dB for the 600 Ω version. If you could prop the DT 880 on a headphone stand or something to stretch it out it wouldn't take long to get the clamping force just right. I use the foobar2000 player with EQ off playing various files from FLAC to m4a to mp3 (VBR/CBR 320). This resulted in more punch to the bass, which most of us would agree is not a strong point of these headphones. None of the others have this much bass extension and impact, detailed highs that sparkle (a little bit sibilant though), and an overall neutral sound signature.
