Sunday Ride – 11th November
Sixteen of us (including Matt, who we picked up on Lower Broadway) set out from Broadway on a cold, but bright and sunny morning, to be joined soon after by Neil M. – who also was late for the 9.30 meet but was able to follow the previously published route to chase down the peloton! Included in our group were three CTC Wantage riders (Andy, Geoff and Paul) and one first-time rider with us (Alan). Also out with us this Sunday was a rather pale-looking Robert Briggs, freshly returned from failing to top up his permatan in India due to elevated levels of smog!
A rather hilly 25 miles to the Wyevale Garden Centre in Thatcham was made all the more interesting by an RTI on the Reading road resulting in the police diverting all the traffic between Lower Basildon and Streatley along Hook End Lane – a route not noted for its passing places. Bloody cars holding up all the traffic!
11.00am saw us stopping on the outskirts of Hermitage for our two minutes’ silence, before the final few miles to the cafe – where a fine selection of cakes greeted us.
A need for saddle height adjustment on a recently-bought bike saw Patrick drop off the back, and the two of us were on our own from a few miles short of Pangbourne – making our own way home from there.
By the time I got home I had done 55 miles in just under 3h 25 minutes.
