About this deal

Rose and Freecloud are the stars in an epic romance that is all the more fun for seeing it from the side. Tam’s whole job is to observe and record, one of the few times (if ever) that I’ve read a book with a character whose job is to NOT participate. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. And you could argue that Eames did that by continuing his stories of mercenary bands roaming the Heartwyld and its environs. It's adventure she wants - and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.

When most sensible debut authors produce something as spectacularly good as Nicholas Eames did with his Kings of the Wyld opener to "The Band" series they tend to follow up with something that gives the fans exactly what they want. The Militant Sisters had moved from planet to planet, mercilessly butchering the cultists they encountered without stopping to free the imprisoned. Bloody Rose ends with the most epic epic battle I have ever read, and, yes, at nearly 100 pages it might drag a little despite being expertly staged.I’m not the fastest reader though I can on occasion fly through some books, Bloody Rose wasn’t one of them. Although she did not die there, Saint Aspira, the Saviour of a Hundred Worlds, was entombed on the distant world of Ero, in the Caradryan Sector of the Segmentum Tempestus. And, thirdly, if you have read KoTW then you will be privy to and get many additional extra little mark out moments that will have you smirking, thinking “fuck yeah” and knowingly nodding in Bloody Rose due to references to the events of the previous book and the appearances by KoTW luminaries. I’ve been lucky enough to catch a handful of these experiences in my lifetime: Daft Punk at Coney Island, Radiohead at MSG Theater, and A Perfect Circle at the Theater of Living Arts.

Most days it wasn’t especially crowded, but there were fights in the arena tomorrow, and some of the biggest mercenary bands in Grandual were coming to town. In any case, Bloody Rose is a solid, rollicking read, and one I’d suggest for anybody who can appreciate a bloody monster fight. But it’s also the only teensy-weensy letdown of the novel in light of how emotionally charged everything else in the story is. I don’t expect every author to go the Brandon Sanderson mile and explain every piece of pseudo-science behind their sorcery, but when magic exists only to be mysterious and powerful, it becomes frustrating, with a reader never knowing when the uber-wizard might sweep in and undo everything with the wave of a hand.Unknowingly manipulated by one of Ghargatuloth's agents, the Renegade Inquisitor Gholic Ren-Sar Valinov, the Sisters of Battles fought against the Grey Knights despatched by the Ordo Malleus to stop Ghargatuloth's rebirth. The fact that there’s a lot of new characters along with those that we know from the first didn’t turn out to be as clustered as I thought it could be, Eames is a master at controlling large groups of characters in and outside of fights; despite the large cast, we have time to get attached to all of the characters, each gets their own character arc, small or not, and you end up all the more close to them for it. Like in his debut novel Kings of the Wyld, Eames pays clever homage to some of his favorite pop culture and musical references that may have inspired him throughout his life. Also, since Tam would likely spend her whole life slinging drinks and playing lute for coppers here in wintry Ardburg, a stroll through the Monster Market was the closest she’d ever come to adventure. All the characters in Bloody Rose must similarly deal with family issues: dickhead dads, rebellious children, loss of family members, family envy, estrangement, etc.

David is usually obsessed with Dark Souls and Fire Emblem, though occasionally ventures into various Final Fantasy and Dragon Age territories. What stood out most was the exceptional balance that was struck between humor, action, character growth, and sheer creativity. M41) - Dimmamar, the birth world of the reforming Ecclesiarch Sebastian Thor, came under attack from the Aeldari of Craftworld Ulthwé in 845. Just passed the halfway point and can feel the Sanderslanche starting - I have a feeling the rest of the book is going to go REAL quick. In mid-late M36, Saint Mina was martyred by a sanguinary cult whilst at prayer in a shrine on Hydraphur.Anyhow, they start off on a secret adventure in the form of one final contract … one final go at fame for Bloody Rose, in the hope to eclipse Saga and her father. I don’t read much fantasy at all but I did pick up the first Eames book on a Kindle daily deal a couple of weeks back. Rose and her band stop in to get hammered, and adopt Tam as their new bard, despite the vehement refusal of Tam’s father to allow her any adventuring. Their holy duty was made clear when a tendril of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Ouroboris spewed into the system.

I’ll gladly admit that after I turned the final page I sat reflecting on what I’d just finished reading and I realised that I had read something that was very special. Along with their booker, Roderick ( who is hilarious) who is akin to a manager and books their arena gigs, tours and handles their contracts. The fact that it understands that bond is what makes the action sing, why you care so damn much for what happens to these people. Although Bloody Rose could stand alone I would read Kings first if you haven't already as quite a few of the events of that one are played upon and the background you will gain will add depth to this one. Additional support during the suppression was provided to the sisters by a delegation of the Adeptus Ministorum. And besides, Tuck Hashford had a hard-and-fast rule when it came to his only daughter becoming a mercenary and joining a band: “ No fucking way.
