About this deal

Keep in mind that Geekbench is a test that only takes a few minutes to run. I suspect the differences may be greater for benchmarks or applications that require a lot of horsepower for a longer sustained period of time. Change the File System to NTFS, and the Volume Label to WINPE as shown below or the firmware flash will not work.

The GPD XD Plus is powered by a Mediatek MT8176 processor running at 2.1Ghz, the graphics chip is a PowerVR GX6250 running at 600Mhz. There is 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. The storage can be expanded with a MicroSD Card. The XD Plus has supports 2/5Ghz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. This time I was able to boot into Debian, connect to the internet, surf the web, stream videos, and do just about everything you’d expect to be able to do with a modern desktop operating system. In 2006, the concept of Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPC) became a reality with small, inexpensive laptops aimed at the masses. UMPC was a collaboration between Intel and Microsoft to create a new market for peripherals. With touch screens and support for a stylus, UMPC was a precursor to modern smartphones, but without cellular connectivity. The firmware reflash will now proceed and is automated – you can now leave it until you see the Windows desktop again. The process will take around 20 to 30 minutes, do not switch the device off or press any buttons during this time. the installation will take a good 5 minutes, seemingly freezing two or three times midway.. just let it run to the end.You can also use this machine for viewing or editing documents, a little coding-on-the-go, for watching movies, or really for anything else you would expect to do on a PC. Just bear in mind that you’ll probably have to type more slowly than you would on a larger machine, and the small screen doesn’t provide a lot of room for multiple windows. But if you are looking for extra graphics performance from a mini-laptop, the GPD P4 Max and GPD Win Mini will have a secret weapon: a PCIe OcuLink-2 port with support for data transfer speeds up to 16GB/s. The keyboard is arranged to accommodate bigger buttons, each button is individual and separated to prevent mistyping. Overall the keyboard is not too congested and it’s surprising how well they managed with the limited space available.

Having it here creates a few problems, first of all it is far from the keys which means that it really interrupts your flow if you need to use it. After having the device for a while I found that I was naturally using the arrow keys and other keyboard shortcuts as much as I could to navigate around as I found it to be much faster than taking my hands off the keyboard to use the optical sensor. The laptop’s 1920 x 1200 pixel display looks pretty great, but you may have to adjust the DPI scaling if you want to fit more content on the screen at once… or if you want to fit less content and make text and images large enough to see without squinting. The keyboard is one of the major differenciators when comparing this laptop to others in the same niche such as the One Mix Yoga 2 and I was able to happily bash out this review on my morning train commute without any frustrations.Given how horrible most laptop cameras are… and how ubiquitous smartphone cameras are, I suspect this is a feature most people won’t miss. But it’s still probably something you should be aware of. Anyway, since I wasn’t able to get online, I didn’t bother installing apps, streaming video, or performing many other tests. But I did fire up a few apps and everything seemed to work fine.
