I decided to go for one that is perhaps less of a traditional cot and more of a tent: the Little Life Arc 2. The only tricky bits I have found are putting the fitted sheets on (they are a bit tight) and putting it up in a confined space.

Its unique two-pole asymmetric frame makes it very stable, and gives you easy access through the enlarged zip-down front panel. When we’re abroad it’s reassuring to know that Rosie is sleeping safely, protected from bugs and mosquitos, thanks to the mosquito mesh. No, I was concerned my children would be able to unzip the front panel and escape their sleeping quarters but there’s a very secure safety toggle to the outside of the zip.Budget accommodation tends not to give you the option to have a cot in the room, so we end up having to rearrange furniture, ask for extra mattresses and in general none of these options are ideal for our youngest daughter. There is a possibility that a child could put a ground peg into their mouth, but only if they were left lying around.

The LittleLife Arc 2 doesn’t come cheap, however, if you travel a lot and often, it’s worth investing a bit more into a good quality lightweight cot. If, however, you were planning to use the cot inside the compartment of a family-sized tent, there would definitely be enough room for it. It provides a lovely, calming environment and Ruth said it felt a bit like her son was sleeping in a bubble. If you’re looking for a lightweight travel cot that's ideal for those grab-and-go moments, then the Arc 2 is a great choice. There are Velcro fastening strips on both the bottom of the mattress and the cot base to make sure the mattress stays firmly attached and doesn’t move around. The tent poles bend to hold the fabric taut and are easy to secure with ground pegs, which are included in the pack.
