Club Run – Hungerford – Sunday 28th July

11 riders set off this morning for Hungerford…Stan, Kevin, Ian, Tom G, Tom S, Neil, Neil M, Dan, Tony, Sam and myself (hope I haven’t forgotten anyone?). There was a fresh SW wind and it was tough going as we headed out to Wantage, the Letcombe’s and then up Hackpen Hill. What should have been a fast descent to Lambourn was spoilt slightly by the headwind. Neil went home his own way via Seven Barrows and the rest of us continued to East Garston and on to Hungerford via The Goodings. We suffered two mechanical’s here..Tom G broke his chain (clearly too much power after returning from the Pyrenees!), which was fixed thanks to a spare link and Dan’s handy chain splitter. Just minutes after this, Ian had a puncture and managed to find and remove the offending flint.

Following a brief downpour we eventually sat down in the Tutti Pole at about 11.15. This cafe was similar to Highworth with waitress service and offering the full range of breakfasts although we all settled for cake, which was good. It seemed quite well set up for cyclists although next time I would try Azuza on the High Street.

We immediately noticed the wind behind us on the return trip and the average speed soon started picking up. The route was Kintbury, Marsh Benham, Boxford, Leckhampstead, Catmore, West Ilsley then a short section on the A34 before returning to Didcot via Hagbourne Hill. Knowing we had a tail wind, Stan suggested we have a go at the ‘A34 sprint’ Strava segment. We gave it our best shot and Neil M unleashed his full power to gain KOM with an average speed of 39mph! There are now 8 DPCC riders in the top ten for this segment!

A hilly route with nearly 1000m of climbing but a strong group who stayed together. Stats: 55 miles in 3hrs 15mins giving a 16.9 mph average
