What is an Audax?

Audaxes come in many forms, but generally they are rides with a routesheet (but no signage), with maximum and minimum speeds. They are not races, but many riders approach them with a personal target in mind. For others, just finishing will be the aim (especially on the longer hillier rides). Some ride in a group, some solo. The most common distances are 100km and 200km, but there are lots of rides at 300, 400 and 600km, with a few flagship events like the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris, run every 4 years (see Steve Luck's account of the P-B-P - ed). The events are run by volunteers, usually making a negligible profit which goes to charity or the kitty for the event next year. For more information you could do worse than look at the (basic but functional) Audax UK website http://www.aukweb.net.

How do I enter?

Choose an event by looking at the calendar http://www.aukweb.net /cal/index.htm - and follow the instructions given there. Some 'progressive' organisers will have online entry details on their event page, but more often you'll need to print out an entry form and send it off with your entry fee and some SAEs.

What is included?

This varies - best to check the supplied details before you set off... You'll get a routesheet with control open/close times (these are usually very detailed, but a few older events sometimes just give you a route outline e.g. village names). There may be free food drink at some of the controls. Many controls will be commercial outlets - cafes or 24hr garages on the night events.

What do I need?

Usually the same stuff you'd take on any day ride. The main difference is on the longer events where night riding may be involved - you'll need reliable lights, consider spares, extra batteries and a head torch. Of course on longer events you'll also need a wider range of clothing - note these events are NOT supported! You ride at your own risk.

Didcot Phoenix and Audax

Although not as popular as time trialling, many Phoenix riders have ridden Audaxes over the years. There are trophies for the most AUK points gained each season by male/female members. The Barbury Bash is a 200km ride (with a 100km little brother), last run in 2006 - we hope to resurrect this great local event soon, all volunteers welcome!
