About this deal

m long structures made of wood or metal, called "pali" (piles), are attached to the seabed, to which ropes and nets are then attached, on which the mussels are grown. The mussels farmed here are particularly tasty and valued because they grow in a special environment, a mixture of salt seawater and karst freshwater. These special environmental conditions of the seas of Taranto are ideal not only for the mussels but also for the fish and crustaceans that find food and shelter between the piles. While there are around 18 submarine freshwater springs, called "Citri", in the Mar Piccolo, there is only one large one in the Mar Grande, which is called "Anello di San Cataldo" in honour of the patron saint of the city. There are lots of smart hotels and guesthouses in Polignano a Mare but prices are at a premium for the area, especially if you want to take advantage of wonderful sea views. From Lecce, it’s an extra hour’s drive to Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost tip of Salento (and Puglia). In August, the boat trips looked very crowded, so we rented our own boat from Piccola Nautica. The cheapest 40HP boat, the Simpaty Honda (which doesn’t require a boat licence) costs from €85 for four hours.

The larger hotels are functional. Try the stylish conversion Palazzo Calo or look on Booking.com for studios.

Getting to Puglia

This expansive nature reserve is only a 30-minute drive from Vieste, but as it’s up in the mountains the temperature drops by 10ºC making it ideal for walking. The food was a creative take on regional fare, and Gege was happy to adapt dishes for us vegetarians as well as serve half portions so we could try a few different pasta dishes. The nearest international airport to the Gargano is Bari (BRI), a 2.5-hour drive from Vieste or 1 hour 45 minutes from Monte Sant’Angelo. Visiting a local winery is more challenging for English speakers as most aren’t well set up for visitors. One option is this wine experience at Feudi di Guagnano winery, 25 minutes outside Lecce. Vineyards cover 106.715ha (263.70 acres) in Apulia, which is 1st place among Italian grape-growing regions. But in the production of quality DOC and DOCG wines, Apulia has only ranked 12th of 20 with 297.667 hl. There are four DOCG wines:

We ended up doing a 1.5-hour easy walk by mixing various signposted trails. First, we walked the short distance from the road on trail 7 to a tiny lake (Laghetto D’Umbra) where turtles basked in the sun on branches peeking out of the water. At the southernmost tip of Salento is Santa Maria di Leuca (also referred to as Leuca). For us, the highlight is the coastal drive here from Castro.

We came here after visiting Porto Selvaggio beach, just 10 minutes away. It was very quiet on a summer morning, but I imagine it’s livelier in the evenings. The main beach here – Torre Lapillo– is a whopping 18km and has a shallow sandy bottom that extends far out to sea. These lagoon-like waters form a protected marine park and its fine sands give it a tropical feel. We’ll wager Trani is somewhere you might never have heard of before. But if you go there, we guarantee you will never forget it!

Sub-national HDI - Area Database - Global Data Lab". hdi.globaldatalab.org. Archived from the original on 23 September 2018 . Retrieved 5 March 2023. Apulia's thriving economy is articulated into numerous sectors boasting several leading companies, but most of them produce materials or components, not finished goods: The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry and sunny summers and mild and rainy winters. Snowfall, especially on the coast is rare but has occurred as recently as January 2019 (following on from snow in March 2018 and January 2017). Apulia is among the hottest and driest regions of Italy in summer, with temperatures sometimes reaching and exceeding 40 °C/104 °F in Lecce and Foggia. Vico del Gargano would be an untouristy, affordable base if you’re more interested in the countryside than the sea (although it’s only a 10-minute drive to the beach).

Accommodation

In this detailed Salento Italy travel guide, we share our tips for the best towns, beaches, activities, and food, plus where to stay and how to get there. There’s not much to see during the day (except the nearby iContadini shop, see below), so come for dinner at one of the restaurants with outside seating. Lecce is easily reached by train as it’s the last stop on the national network (see Trenitalia). It’s a 6-hour train ride from Rome.

San Domino is the largest and most naturally beautiful island and where you’ll find the most accommodation. San Nicola is the only other inhabited island. Additionally, we spent quite a bit of time admiring the yachts and fishing boats while walking around its harbor, as well as sunbathing on its golden beaches. After returning to Leuca, we continued in the other direction on the Ionian Coast. The coastline is lower with more pebble beaches where you can anchor and swim in the clear water. If you’d prefer to learn about local wine from an expert, consider this Salento wine tasting in Lecce where you try six wines with local products. In Brindisi, there is a chemical industrial park with an ENI power station, ENI oil refinery, Syndial chemical factory, and Versalis chemical factory (basic chemistry, intermediates, polyethene, styrenics and elastomers). LyondellBasell polypropylene plant, Sanofi plant (antibiotics). Another ENI oil refinery is located in Taranto. [21] Unemployment [ edit ] Lecce is blessed with a soft limestone so easy to work that Lecce became the center for ornate architectural ornamentation, called the barocco leccese, or Leccese Baroque. Lecce is a great town to walk around in, and it has several fine restaurants.
