Bob Books Sight Words: First Grade ( ISBN 978-0545019248) introduces 30 additional sight words at the first grade level. Bob Books came about as a result of teacher Bobby Lynn Maslen’s careful attention to the specific needs of children learning to read for the very first time. As a teacher, Bobby’s work with 3 to 5 year-olds involved constant invention in art, math games, physical growth activities and, of course, reading materials. When she didn’t find books that she felt were the right fit for her young students, she created Bob Books.
The first Bob Books were individually hand-drawn for Bobby Lynn Maslen's students. When it became too cumbersome to make books for each child, she persuaded the school to print 300 copies. This eventually led to more sets, a cottage industry and self publishing. Bob Books Set 4: Compound Words ( ISBN 0-439-84506-8) includes new word blends, more sight words and longer multi syllable words. Bob Books Set 3: Word Families ( ISBN 0-439-84509-2) includes consonant blends, endings and a few sight words.

Though it is great to have extra tips of the trade when teaching reading, some of the hints in these books can be a bit confusing. For example, in the “W” book, it instructs adults to help sound out the “W” sound by saying “WUH.” While it is so common to exaggerate a letter sound this way, it can be misguided. A “W” sound does not actually include an “UH” sound in it, and it could be teaching a child to add extra letter sounds where only a single sound belongs. This is where the science of reading can become a bit complex, especially for children who are struggling with blending sounds. For adults who are less experienced with teaching reading skills, hints like this can possibly be misleading and cause more confusion for a new reader down the line. 3. ArtworkIllustrator John Maslen is a watercolor painter and architect. He holds signature status in the National Watercolor Society and several other art organizations. He also received an American Institute of Architects Honor Award. Over night, the Maslens were inundated with phone calls. The books had entered the spotlight, and parents eager to help their children learn to read wanted Bob Books. “By that time we were going crazy,” Bobby Maslen says. “We knew the potential was much more than we could handle ourselves.” The Maslens turned to a major publisher of children’s books, Scholastic, Inc., for help.
