The music soundtracked the style and a stygian obsidian soundtrack that coalesced from the many fragments of culture that had been flirted with in the post-war pop narrative. Finally, after a decade of work, countless interviews and immersin

Now, Robb said there’s been a shift in attitudes ( he cited the pioneering work of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation) and noted how goth is thriving. Set on the wild, heather-tufted moors of West Yorkshire, Emily Brontë's tale of the obsessive passion between Cathy and Heathcliff is the literary equivalent of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart. Trouble is, he keeps referring to it as "post-goth" (an ironic label given Goth's origins as"post-punk") while smooging it all into an indistinguishable mass. Anyone who has encountered The Book of Kells cannot help but be impressed by the labyrinthine coils of the Celtic imagination.Places like The Batcave in London and The Phono in Leeds were massive in bringing the goth movement together,” Robb said. A real labour of love (a decade in the making) Robb’s book takes as its jumping-off point the architecture, literature and philosophy that was deemed “Gothic”. and, at the end, we're brought up to date with new incarnations across the globe and the role of social media.

Thatcher’s reign from May 4th, 1979 until November 22nd, 1990 gave Unsworth both her timeline and the Season of the Witch of her title. From what I've heard (and I don't know how accurate this is, but it makes sense), The Art of Darkness was intended to be an in-depth history of the British post-punk scene in the late 1970s and early 80s, with an overview of its roots in earlier work. My own first experience of Bauhaus was at the Futurama 3 Festival, where I noticed a huge amount of leather jackets bearing their name, the first indication I had of how big a band they were going to be.The book seems to have kick-started a goth revival according to the Guardian with others books on goth are rumoured to be following in its wake. Starting the book with the VisiGoths may seem more like etymology than musical study, but Robb seems determined to leave no stone unturned in his exploration of the roots of Goth culture. On the way, this widely cast net also takes in the likes of Black Sabbath, Leonard Cohen, The Rolling Stones, Bowie and Iggy, along with scenes such as glam rock, punk and Krautrock.

As the drummer and keyboard player in The Cure, Tolhurst was at the epicentre of this post-punk scene and shares moving anecdotes about his interactions with the key players.

pages with interviews with the likes of Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einsturzende Neubauten, Danielle Dax, Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure, Nick Cave and many others, this is a deepdive and walk on the dark side and into the very heartland of Goth. With interviews with the likes of Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einsturzende Neubauten, Danielle Dax, Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure, Nick Cave and many others this is a deep dive and walk on the dark side and into the darkheartland of Goth. To add to the completeness of the book, there is also a kind of round-up of bands who never made it to Goth’s Premier Division. Other parts of the book focus on highlighting the female artists who were central to the scene, and the importance of grassroots venues to the development of sub-cultures like goth. Robb also discovered that in the same month the review was published, Iggy Pop was also watching Morrison while still a student at university.

Marr also spoke to me about the influence of bands like The Birthday Party’s Rowland S Howard on his own guitar style. He also reaches back farther to key historic events and movements that frame the ideas of Goth, from the fall of Rome to Lord Byron and the Romantic poets, European folk tales, Gothic art and the occult. It may have been a retrospective term for a scene that was already thriving, but its back story goes back millennia. Tolhurst’s engaging historical memoir is the third of three books this year to examine Goth music and culture, following on from John Robb’s Art of Darkness: The History of Goth and Cathi Unsworth’s Season of the Witch: The Book of Goth (published in May). The next day, when Cave came to do his gig in Manchester, he had to sit on the drum riser all through the gig because he was absolutely knackered from being up all night at this mad little do in Hulme! One of my favourite quotes in the book comes from Edge of Darkness, Troy Kennedy Martin’s 1985 Cold War BBC drama, which was inspired by the Miners’ Strike, and is spoken by one of two shady secret service agents who are manipulating Bob Peck’s lead character, a Yorkshire policeman, into doing their bidding.
