2013 membership – applications now being accepted for next season

Hi All,

Although the time trial season has now ended, the Didcot Phoenix Cycling Club continues to be involved in many events on and off road.  Traditonally the winter season is taken up with Cyclocross, a mixture between a road race and mountain biking!  If you are interested in participating in a cyclocross event, please contact the club ( or leave a message on our website.

As we draw towards the end of the year, the club is also taking membership for the 2013 season.

Didcot Phoenix AGM – Minutes from Oct 17th (draft)

Meeting started 8.06pm

Present: Ian Middleton, Phil Brown, Duncan O’Reilly, Mark Scanlan, Adam G, Mike Cooper, Laura Cooper, Phil Robbins, Trevor Patey, Dave Rodger, Nick Druce, Richard Abbot, Stan Micak, Matt Chambers, Robert Briggs, Tom Gray, Phil Stacey, Simon Mc Gowan, Pete Annells.

Last year’s AGM Minutes were discussed and passed.

Presidents Report- Ian passed congratulations to Stan as National Champion, Matt on his organisation of the Audax and his London to Paris adventure (second time round), Phil Brown who broke club records this year including the 100 mile record in under 4 hours and Max Brown (no relation to Phil) on his racing in Belgium. Ian was pleased that Dalton Barracks got moving this year as a closed circuit venue. Membership numbers have hovered to about 76 this year which should be a focus to improve on. He also hoped that general committee/non committee member communications could be improved in the coming year.

Membership Secretary report (John absent)- membership of 76 ‘vibrant and buoyant’ according to John.

Treasurers report (Mick absent) – balance at £6755.91, with CX being a good source of income yet again (with thanks to outgoing CX secretary Phil Robbins), and brief discussions of comparing quotes for trophy engraving and suppliers.

Time Trial Secretary report – 22 events, with 10-20 numbers most evenings. A big thank you to Pete Annells for his consistent and welcome help throughout the year. Possibility of extending the season discussed and will be discussed during next committee meeting.

Possibility that the gravel pit/ housing estate traffic may affect some TT courses, but time schedules (post 6.30 starts), possibly avoiding any congestion.

British Cycling secretary report – an overall decrease in BC membership this year, possibly due to the decrease in organised road racing. The central region has proposed that the national TT champs be held midweek prior to the national Road Race championships weekend and within a 50 mile radius.

Touring/club run secretary- club run numbers static this year. Shame no increase in regular member numbers, but an improvement in the sociability aspect of the club runs contrasting with a disappointing lack of improvement of riding etiquette (riding 3 abreast etc), with ideally the more experienced riders contributing ideas and becoming active policers. Club run insurance discussed- see item 11 of AOB.

Social secretary report – Spinning going well (Thursday evenings at Pavilion). Awards evening a success. End of TT season dinner enjoyable.

Events sectary- Cyclocross ‘who does what’ list circulated and some members added names to help out. Please contact Duncan ( or 07595454298), if you can help out over the weekend of the 26/27th of November.

Ben Owen will be scheduled for the nearest Thursday to midsummer this year.

Election of Committee for 2012

The following members were elected to serve on the Club Committee until the 2012 AGM…

Ian stepped down as Chairman. Nick Druce was nominated by PB as president with Ian seconding this. Nick was elected unopposed.

  1. Club Insurance- CTC vs BC

The committee propose to increase the club membership to £25 to include affiliate membership with the CTC. The price will remain the same for juniors and students. If proof of independent membership of CTC or BC is provided the cost will be £13.


  1. A proposal was tabled to pay club members £5 an hour when helping at club events. Various suggestions were tabled- club kit subsidies, a ‘wall of shame’ for those club members guilty of not offering to help, subsidised meals at club presentation evening. Committee to discuss and streamline this issue in an attempt to increase member participation in helping at club events.


  1. A proposal was tabled about the possibility of changing the club kit design in the future. The possibility was discussed for this to coincide with the club anniversary (in 3 years time). Tom offered to assist in the design process at the appropriate time.


The upcoming CX event at Chiltern Edge School, Reades Lane, Sonning Common (near Reading) RG4 9LN was discussed. Duncan stated that the venue was secured earlier in the summer and setup would be on Saturday the 26th November from 10am with Raceday on Sunday the 27th with races starting at 11am. The main race will start at 1pm and the current feeling is that numbers will be so large on the day (Wessex will be using our event as a point scoring round for their league), that seniors and veterans should be divided to make scoring less stressful.
