WLCA 50 – Sunday 15th July

Hi All

A few of us tried our hands at the WLCA 50 on Sunday morning: Neil Morris and Neil Ashcroft, Mick Fountain, Pete Tantrum and myself.

The course is two laps from Kingston Bagpuise down to Watchfield and back via Faringdon on the A420. Weather was pretty good considering the rain the day before and the roads started and stayed dry – lovely.

My ride was pretty steady, a poorly daughter meant not much sleep over the course of Friday and Saturday nights. But I enjoyed being out on the road and my first 20 mile split was not far off my PB for the course, but on the second lap my legs started to tie up a bit on the drags – not helped by what felt like a slightly rising wind. The last section from Watchfield was however with a good following wind which eased the pain a little and made the last part of the race fun. I finished with a better time than I expected, but a minute or so down on my best on this course.

I only really saw Pete to speak to at the end as I had to get home sharpish. He was close to going under 2hrs on his first ever 50 – an awesome performance.

It was great to have Al Allcock and Dave Rodger shouting encouragement on the Kingston Bagpipes roundabout and then Steve Luck and Dunco oing the same at Watchfiled. It’s the first time I’ve had a marshall running down the road cheering in a tdf stylee in a timetrial – well done Dunc you obviously had your beetroot for breakfast!

Thanks to Mark Scanlan for being Timekeeper, Mick for organising the event and Marion for taking the times for halfway (and also for stopping on the way to the start to see if I was Ok whilst i tried to sort my gears out).

Hopefully will catch up with you soon

Ron Smith doubles up with the club 25 championship!

the A420 and Oxonian CC provided the setting for the club 25 championship on Sunday. With Smith, Ashcroft and Tantrum all primed to duke it out for the cup, the chasers- McGowan, Middleton, Morris et al were looking for Fourth place on the day.

It was (another) pretty ordinary day- gusting breeze from somewhere and light rain making the course that little more difficult on the morning.

It was everyone’s favourite Scotsman (outside of that gawky wet fish Murray), Ronald Reginald Dermott Smith (58.30)who nipped the cup on the day by 4 seconds to an inspired Neil Ashcroft (58.34), who wasn’t going to let his title go without a fight. Pete Tantrum zipped up and down withing 19 seconds of the Rocket, his time of 58.49 meaning there was a blanket of just 19 seconds over the speedy trio.

Zoe Ludwig-Tantrum led the Didcot Gals home on the day to win the 25 cup and congratulations to her as like Ronnie McHaggis McSmith she made it a 10/25 double which almost £7K on her bike (which we all have apparently). Well done Zoe, and congrats on trophy two for the year!

Results as follows

R Smith 58.30

N Ashcroft 58.34

P Tantrum 58,49

D O’Reilly 61.12

I Middleton 62.08

S McGowan 62.58

P Stacey 63.22

N Morris 63.33

R Briggs 65.25

I Kent 65.38

R B-Davies 69.03

Z Ludwig-Tantrum 71.57 (gals 25 champ)

M Fountain 74.23 (fastest male over 90)

For heavens sake, can everyone start practicing the Hill Climb course or Ron will break his rear axle with all the trophies he’s going to take home on presentation night…..

Well done to all riders and particularly our volunteers for turning up on a wet and windy evening last Thursday, as the TT season continued with mixed weather conditions.

Rocket Ron is Club 10 Champion 2012!

Last Thursday saw the Didcot Phoenix Cycling Club race on the H10/17r course, on the A420 near Southmoor.  Conditions were dry with a slight tail wind blowing across the course, perfect for a fast run out to Tubney.

All riders completed the course, with many beating or very close to their personal bests.

The race was won by Ron Smith, 19 seconds ahead of last years winner, Neil Ashcroft.

The trophy was presented on the night.

Club 10 Mile Championships Preveiw…

It’s been a mixed season conditions wise so far, but the quick times on Fairmile this week will hopefully hold out for this coming Thursday which would lead to some exciting performances and blistering new PB’s.

Vying for the 10 mile cup will Be Rocket Ron McSklonney-Smith, Neil Ashcroft, Mark Harvey, Pete Tantrum, Nick Druce, Mike Cooper, Ian McMiddleton and Dave Rodger.

The second teir of riders whi will be mixing it up includes Stevie Rowe, Simmo McGowan, Big Neil Morris, Dunca O’Reilly, Andy Harrison, Phil Stacey, Pete Warwich, Robbo Briggs although look for a dark horse from this group for a sneaky top 10.

It should be a hot contest between our TT queens with Laura and Zoe for the ladies TT crown.

Lets cross our fingers and our toes for a not too warm but calm day- the longish range forecast is promising at this stage with showers clearing and the wind dropping.

Helpers who have committed to run the night are Marion Fountain, Phil Brown (who some may remember from his pre-paternal days) and Mark Scanlan so far. We could do with one more volunteer as the start and finish are separated on Southmoor. Many thanks to you guys in advance. It gives me a chance to ride!

Good luck and may you all record your best times ever.

Club TT Fairmile 24.5.12

A bumper roll up of 39 saw some pretty fast conditions at Fairmile on Thursday. There were some great times which is promising the week before the Club 10 champs at Southmoor next week. Ronnie McSklonney Smith was first home for DPCC with his old nemisis from last year’s 10 mile champs Neil Ashcroft 15 seconds behind. Add the triumvurate of Tantrum, Druce and Cooper who interestingly all came in with exactly the same time and we’ve got a battle royale on our hands.

For the second teir who won’t necessarily be battling for the cup, there’s a gaggle of riders all nudging personal bests with Stevie Rowe, Simmo McGowan, Neil Morris, Phil Stacey and even Duncan O’Reilly looking to duck under 24 mins for the first time.

Fantastic new PB for new young club rider Will (I am) Annells on Uncle Pete’s bike, who was quite a proud finish line timekeeper on the night (thanks again Pete).

Train hard and taper well and See you at Southmoor next Thursday!!!

Fairmile on Thursday

Hi All,

Finally the weather looks like it is getting warmer, so hopefully this will mean some quick times on the Fairmile course this Thursday – the 24th May.  The night is a designated “Come and Try It” event,  so we welcome all newcomers; come along and have a go at your first Time Trial of the season!

See you there,

Mike
