About this deal

This is Graham Smith’s experience of attending innumerable public and media debates with defenders of the institution.

It just reaffirmed what I already think without being too revolutionary or bogged down in facts/figures. They aren't accountable to anyone, and yet between them they are privy to more government secrets than many cabinet ministers. Academics and journalists have faced either stonewalling or outright lawfare in response to even modest attempts at getting scrutiny.

Smith counters this argument brilliantly in essence showing that there is a great difference between being actively in favour of something and passively being ok with it continuing. Eventually, the government will be unable to ignore public clamour for a referendum on the monarchy’s continuation.

Yet just four weeks later, as the constitution, at the centre of which lies the Crown, was in crisis [because Boris Johnson's government ministers had nearly all resigned yet he still clung on as PM], the Queen had vanished. Smith is hazy on the itinerary, but that doesn’t stop him looking forward to a time when the ‘champions of our most cherished shared values’ appear in place of the king on stamps, and the likes of Carol Ann Duffy are put to work writing a republican constitution. Transworld have bought world rights in Abolish the Monarchy by the Chief Executive of Republic, Graham Smith, and publish next year. As the country faces a growing number of crises we’re heading for a crisis of confidence in our constitution, our head of state and the whole political system. One moment we see the monarch, and are told of her great virtues, the next she is nowhere to be seen, as we're told that under no circumstances can the Queen be 'dragged into' doing her job. It has been long enough that monarchists and the democracy-averse refuse to engage with polemics that challenge their beliefs in hereditary rule and concentration of power in an secretive, corrupt, inbred and embarrassing bloodline. These days I take some pride in being considered the most anti-monarchy person one of my friends knows.
