June was another excellent month for our roadies, particularly our ladies.
Olivia Bentley led the charge by finishing runner up in two in successive Bovingdon Bomber circuit races. The latter of these came at the end of a 45 minute 2-up break, proving that brave early moves can – and do – stick. As if that wasn’t enough she made it a hot-trick of podiums by finishing 3rd in the next one to round-off a super month. Could a series win be on the cards?
Moving to Thruxton, high finishes by Olivia (4th) and Laura Pittard (3rd – another club podium!) secured them promotions to 2nd and 3rd cat respectively. In the same race, Clare Hoffman came 7th, her best ever result in a road race. Chapeau ladies!
Speaking of promotions, Grant Goodall gained promotion to 3rd cat at the very same circuit with a 9th place finish.
Now, Clare and her beau, Martin Stanley, are NOT competitive which is just as well as he won the VC10 cat 34 road race in Leighton Buzzard by going early in the uphill “sprint” (read “slog”) to the line and holding off the bunch. They may not be competitive but Stan’s thinly-veiled KFC reference in his “chicken dinner” Strava meme left readers under no illusions that Clare is the classier of the two…
Back at Dalton Barracks, a great team effort saw Harri James land 7th place from a competitive field of nearly 100. Anthony Atkin and Dan Atkins got into early breaks only to be pulled back. Simon Kelly chased down the only break where the club wasn’t represented and, once Harri had made the decisive move, his “rabble”, led by me and Dan, blockaded the front of the peloton, helping him to stay away.
Lastly it’s also great to see new roadies Jared Jedynowicz, Mark Shoring and Clive Seabrook having fun and mixing it up in the bunch. Keep it up guys!
