Lauren Tranter has just become a first-time mother of twin boys, Riley and Morgan. While still in hospital, she begins to struggle with her new role. Destiny Williams: Destiny is also Dannys daughter but not Suzys. Danny and her mother went out before she was born but when Destiny was born, Danny wasnt around anymore. She sets out to find her father and becomes a good friend of Sunsets. Wilson, Laura (2019-05-17). "The best recent crime and thrillers – review roundup". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077. Archived from the original on 2023-07-04 . Retrieved 2023-07-04.

Destiny is also an interesting character. At just 11 years old she feels more like the parent and has to plead with her mother, Kate, to seek help for her deteriorating condition. It feels as though we are meant to pity Kate for working so hard and trying to connect Destiny with her father - and whilst it was certainly sad to read about her neglecting her own health and falling into a depression, any likeability for her character was destroyed by how frustrating it was to read about her hysterical obsession with Danny and the way in which she neglects Destiny because of it. You don't need blood and gore to make a great horror story. Atmosphere, if masterfully done, will keep you creeped out and chill you to the bone. This eerie story will do that. This is done that masterfully. It will engage your mind on a wild ride and leave you so haunted, you may begin to question your own state of sanity, your own definition of sanity.

First, let me say that I’m a huge freaking fan of Lore. I’m not saying that guaranteed I would like this book or anything, but it definitely help because the little blurb was misleading. This book wasn’t inspired by fairy tales, it was inspired by folklore and if you’re anything like me, you want to draw little hearts on either side of that word. It helps, too, that the use of folklore was done in a really aesthetically pleasing way; not only was the book directly inspired by twin lore and lore about changelings, each chapter was marked with an epigraph from a fairy tale or folktale that marked the theme of the upcoming chapter. These were very well selected and just lovely.

So is Lauren telling the truth? Is there a sinister woman who stole babies or is she delusional and suffering from mental illness? Or is this more complicated and sinister than we may imagine? A huge thank you to Sarah at Crooked Lane Books, NetGalley and Melanie Golden for a galley of this novel to read and review. Personally I love something juicier, more surprising, twisty and extreme stories when it comes to read something mysterious but this book is mystical, psychological fiction playing with our minds. It didn’t fit with my expectations but the writing is quiet good and the parts about Lauren’s fight with inner demons, her struggles to be a good and protective mother, trying to gather her strength mentally and psychically without anyone’s support were written quiet impeccably. It’s impossible not to feel for her character and live inside her mind and heart. a b Little Darlings | Bookreporter.com. Archived from the original on 2023-07-04 . Retrieved 2023-07-04. I think the police procedural aspects are the weakest part of the novel. Little Darlings is at its strongest when hovering somewhere between a portrait of postpartum depression and a dark, sinister fairy tale. I can speak from experience when I say depression can be terrifying. And just like in this novel, you can never quite be sure what is a legitimate feeling and what is an exaggerated response brought on by your mental state; these two often overlap.Immediately after finishing, I was thinking I would give it a 4.5-star rating. There were a couple of plot points that I wished had been expanded on, or moved around in the context of the story, but upon further reflection, to hell with that. The horror continues at home. Another scare believed by no one but Lauren. As she gets more sleep-deprived and depressed, her husband suggests she take the twins for a walk. The walk seems to work when Lauren sits on a bench and dozes, only to wake up and find the twins missing. They are found shortly after, but Lauren insists the babies are shells with their inner selves gone, replaced with demon-like creatures.

Golding also wanted to write a novel that depicted pregnancy and childbirth in a way that was not "sugarcoated" because she felt that the physical difficulties involved were often downplayed to pregnant women, including herself in the past. [4] She stated that after giving birth, she felt as if she had been given unrealistic expectations of childbirth and wanted the protagonist to have a "fairly standard birth experience" that represented the pain and hardships of the process. [5] She also noted the absence of negative birth experiences in the fiction she had read up to that point. [5] [6] As a mom of four I remember the sleep deprived feelings, forgetting what day it even is, never having time for a shower or to read even a magazine or newspaper and the constant needs of a newborn. I can’t even imagine the exhaustion of this new mother of twins. When Lauren reports having a visit in the night from a sinister character carrying a basket of twins that she plans to replace Lauren's twins with, the story is dismissed as ludicrous. Hospital staff, as well as her husband, think Lauren is just hormonal and exhausted after giving birth to twins. Lauren - Goddamn, this book really messed with my mind. Phew. It's not outright said that Lauren is mentally unstable for a good half of the book but it's subtly implied. Notice, I said subtly. Things as little as an item out of place or a shadow that looked as though it was moving made me feel a little closer to insanity. Did you know that if you put a frog in room temperature water and then slowly turn the heat up until it's boiling, the frog won't notice? It gets hotter and hotter and then BOOM, it's dead. It was like that with Lauren. At first, she was pretty average but then I realized she, and thus me, had gone completely batsh*t crazy.Melanie Golding writes an atmospheric and creepy tale that will leave you wondering what’s real and what’s not! Normally I avoid anything remotely supernatural but in this case it worked. I was actually left wanting more of that aspect! Little Darlings is the debut novel of author Melanie Golding. [1] The book is based on changeling folklore, in which human children are abducted by fairies and replaced with fairy children. [2] It was partly inspired by Golding's personal theory that folktales about changelings were a way to explain postpartum psychosis in premodern times. [3] [4] She had discussed maternal bonding with psychologists and other women and found it was often a gradual process despite the popular perception that mothers will feel a "rush of love" when they first see their child. She described this misconception as a "modern folktale". [4] Now, knowing all that about me, how can a book like that not intrigue me?? Honestly, the little girl with the big colourful fairy tales book just started jumping up and down. Riveting, terrifying and at times heartbreaking…Melanie Golding’s disturbing portrait of a new mother’s paranoia is superbly written, cleverly plotted and gruesomely beautiful in an unforgettable way. A stunning debut.” I was immediately drawn into this story and felt a strong connection throughout. The author, Melanie Golding, does a brilliant job building suspense, keeping the intensity of the intrigue engrossing throughout the entire story. The characters were fantastic – I loved the two main characters, Lauren and DS Jo Harper. I could strongly relate to Lauren – Golding did an exceptional job capturing the chaos and exhaustion of a new mom.

I also enjoyed the police-procedural side of the story. The clues, the investigation and a determined officer added to the tension and intrigue. An intoxicating and atmospheric journey. I had so many ideas of what was truly happening, who was behind the kidnapping, etc. but in the end I was wrong. At least I think I was wrong, because the ending leaves one guessing! You stroll through the park, the sun on your shoulders and crisp leaves crunching underfoot, when a coming bench is all too tempting to take a little rest with your boys.

Little Darlings cast

Golding had first begun working on a short story about changelings set in the modern day because the folklore frightened her, which became much longer than she originally planned. While researching for the story, she found that similar folktales were common across cultures. [5] She wrote the novel as part of her master's degree in creative writing at Bath Spa University. [6] Little Darlings by Melanie Golding was a perfect novel to read in the lead-up to Halloween. This book is creepy, scary, and unsettling, in the vein of traditional fairy and folk tales. Each section begins with an excerpt from such a tale to set the disturbing mood. Oh my goodness! This book rolled out as a truly creepy read that had me keeping several lights in the house shining bright as I huddled in the corner of my sofa, shaking while I read on. Having said that there are some parts that didn’t work. Detective Harper and her storyline with a reporter didn’t add to the story at all and were in fact distracting,g from the main mystery. Also, the ending did not answer all the unanswered questions, which was sort of disappointing. Harper - And now the part of the review where I tell you how much I related to this character. Harper is a detective who catches wind of Lauren's case. Even though it's been set aside, Harper just can't let it go and begins to do her own research. It was this determination and strong will to go against the tide that made me love Harper so much. If we ever get a sequel or companion novel, I would love to see more of her.
