Such excitement here at DPCC HQ. Hot on the heels of Swish and Chips (which didn’t suffer at all from being Swish and Pizza in the end), we’re pleased and proud to present: Aero Night.
Join us on April 12 from 6 pm for an evening at Mountain Mania Cycles in Didcot to eat the metric ton of aerated chocolate I’ve currently got in my car boot, enjoy your club discount, and hear from our two guest speakers (from about 7 ish): Mark Harvey from Take3 will talk about bike fit, and Xavier Disley founder of Aerocoach will talk about taking aero even further.
All welcome for a social evening with a difference.
As everyone knows, one cyclist’s pile of disused things is another cyclist’s treasure trove. Therefore, from 6pm on Thursday 23 March, please attend Brightwell Pavilion with all the things from your garage/wardrobe/kitchen/bookshelves/spare room/cupboard under the stairs that have anything to do with cycling but that you (and perhaps your dear family) don’t have the time to love.
There will be two tables: free to a good home, and items you’ve labelled with a price and your name.
We’ll dispatch someone on a chipshop run to ensure no-one flags, and we can rummage and negotiate long into the night.
Just a reminder that the DPCC kit (as worn by Gareth Davies for his recent CX podium, well done G!) is in stock at Mountain Mania in Didcot. They currently have lots of pairs of arm and leg warmers in stock, plus the gilets that everyone likes, bibshorts in all sizes (I know we’re not all double-hard, but you could wear them on the turbo) and jerseys in all sizes except small and medium. If you’d like a size that isn’t in stock, or XXS or XXL, please pop in and let Mountain Mania know so they can request it in the next order.
We at Didcot Phoenix are so far ahead of the curve, we can’t even see the curve any longer, and we believe socks are where it is at. We’ve found some posh winter merino socks that match our kit, and if 20 of us would like them, we can do a bulk order and save at least 15%: £16 a pair. That’s £8 per foot. Email (or get your mum to email*) email@example.com with your size by Friday 9th December if you would like a pair. We’ll only order if there are 20 of us (that’s 40 feet, for those of you working in imperial).
*mummy secretary, whom many of you met at the Barbury Bash, is a whizz with the internet these days, and it may be that your parents are similarly proficient and love you enough to buy you a present.
Just a quick update to let you know we’ve received in a fresh batch of clothing which includes the long awaited skin suits and also Women’s bib shorts so you can let all know they are here.
Also just on a side note with the end of the bike model year approaching we’ve picked up a few end of season deals including Scott Plasma Tri Frames and Bikes of which some will be over 50% off. Just wanted to let you guys know in case anyone is looking for one.
The predicted rain held off for the final Thursday evening TT of the season on the Fairmile course and Mark Cox (Fairly United) claimed first place, with Neil Ashcroft 2nd and Simon McGowan 3rd. On Thursday 20th August the club will be holding a small hill climb in Little Wittenham followed by a social at the Plough in Long Wittenham.
Please find yourself invited to The Road Room (aka Mountain Mania) on Wednesday evening from 19:30 – 21:30 to purchase kit and receive other shop discounts.
10% off club kit – individual items 15% off club kit basic bundle (Shorts, Jersey, Gilet, Arm warmers) 20% off club kit full bundle (basic bundle + skinsuit and leg warmers)
Skinsuit sizes will be available to try on the night, with a 3 or 4 week turnaround on skinsuit orders.
On the night there will also be 20% off RoadRoom/Mountain Mania stock (or items pre-ordered on the night).
The Road Room have purchased a quantity of kit based upon our Didcot Phoenix booking form so these members will have an opportunity to buy first. Moving forwards the shop will be keeping stock of club kit items from now on, so there will be easy options to try and buy.
In addition to the current kit order (that I hear on the grapevine is very close to being delivered), we would like to collate interest in Club skinsuits. This is to enable the shop to place an order our behalf.
The shop does have a long sleeve sample in large for those wanting to try on for sizing.
If you are interested please fill in the following form:
Hello to all club members, welcome to the May edition of the club newsletter. The weather is now getting better and days are getting longer which means we all have more time for cycling, so hopefully you will be able to spend some time away from your bikes reading this.
Oxford Road Race League
The ORRL is nearly upon us with the first round at Weston on the Green on the 30th May, if you ever thought of giving road racing a go this would be a great opportunity. You will need to have a BC Race License to participate. The DPCC round is on the 4th June at GreatShefford and the more members we have entered the more chance we will have of getting some Kudos (sorry for the Strava reference) for the club. There is a men’s and women’s competition with some great prizes to be won. For all those interested please go to www.orrl.co.uk to enter and to get all the locations and start times etc.
Alternatively, if there is anybody willing to give up some of their time on the 4th June to help out, then please contact either myself Simon Evans or Nick Druce at firstname.lastname@example.org
The TT season is now in full swing with good numbers turning out even in the wind and rain. Those of you that were at Fairmile on 1st May now know what racing in the rain is like, the next 2 Thursday evenings are 22nd May at Fairmile and the DPCC 10 mile cup at Southmoor on the 29th May. The Scratch and Castle trophy competitions are also very closely run at the moment. With Ron Smith leading Neil Ashcroft by 1 point in the Scratch (http://www.mickfountain.co.uk/poiscr14.htm), and Andy Clark leading Giles Clark again by a solitary point in the Castle (http://www.mickfountain.co.uk/points14.htm).
Also, Congratulations go to George Towersey for breaking the Junior 10 time trial record twice within recent weeks, the latter being with a time of 21 minutes 36 seconds, on a very windy Southmoor course on the 8th May.
We also have a couple of club organised Open TTs coming up in the near future, so please put the dates in your diary if you are thinking of competing but more so we need lots of helpers for all of the events. A volunteering page will be added to the club website for those willing to help our organisers Dave Rodger and Mick Fountain for:
Also this year sees the 25th Anniversary of the Ben Owen inter club time trial on 19th June Stadhampton 118A course, the club is looking to enter a strong men’s and women’s team. Mike Cooper and Clare Hofmann are respective team managers and will be polling club members for team selection. Again we will need some helpers to make sure the event runs smoothly.
The Barbury Bash is being organised again this year by Ian Middleton and is being run on Sunday 13th July, there will not be a club run on this day so all those regular club runners can come and give an Audax a go. If last year is anything to go by it will be a great day out in the saddle with a group of like minded people. Entry costs £6 for all route distances, 110km, 160km or 210km. http://www.didcotphoenix.co.uk/?page_id=10
Rapha Women’s 100
On Sunday 20th July thousands of women around the globe will join together and ride 100km for the Rapha #womens100. Last year 4000 women took part, and this year they are trying to double that figure, so the club (in particular Clare and Laura) thought it would be a great idea for the ladies of the club to join in as this date coincides with a ladies club run.
We have teamed up with Mountain Mania in Didcot who have agreed to open on the day and support the ladies during the event. We will start and finish at the shop on the Wantage Road next door to the Co-Op, the ride will be split into 2 halves so the ladies can purchase gels/refreshments from the shop and for the shop to provide any mechanical assistance if required. For further details please go to the website and Facebook and come and sign up for 100km of enjoyable cycling: http://pages.rapha.cc/womens100
We are in the motions of ordering some new club kit from a couple new suppliers who are able to provide those bits of kit to us, that will enable us to look good both in the winter and summer (wind jackets, gilets, winter bib tights, skinsuits). The members that were at the TT at Stadhampton on the 17th April will have tried on the sample kit. Our clothing secretary Tom Gray will be sending out details of ordering soon, in the mean time take a look at the following websites to get an idea of the kit and likely prices www.impsport.com (skinsuits) www.owayo.com (all other kit).
Membership numbers are over 90 for this year, if you have any friends or family that are thinking of taking up cycling get them to come and join DPCC the more members we have the stronger the club becomes, any enquiries to email@example.com, for those family and friends that are looking to get more experience out on a bike then the new beginners rides may be of interest to them:
The next scheduled beginners ride is on 25th May starting from Broadways pub at 9:00 a.m. please invite all possible cycling lovers to come along and join a leisurely ride around the Oxfordshire countryside.
Well I think that is enough from me, as I need to clean my bike, hope to see you out on your bike sometime soon.
