ORRL 2017 round up

Armchair racing correspondent Vicky Lawson writes…

Ten events, squillions of gallons of sweat, and inexplicably, Phoenix didn’t win. Sort it out next year, chaps and lady-chaps, yeah?

Congratulations to the winners:

Men Individual: Greg Fitzek – Cowley Road Condors
Men Individual (U23): Greg Fitzek – Cowley Road Condors
Men Team: GS Henley
Women Individual: Aimee Jones – Cowley Road Condors
Women Team: Cowley Road Condors

We, small but mighty, were 4th women’s team and 5th men’s team. I feel a 2018 bird-off coming on.

We had some great performances to be proud of. The Hofley household – Martin ‘Stan’ Stanley, a magnificent overall 8th man, was accompanied by blushing racing debutante Clare Hofmann (12th woman). The Pittards: Laura 9th and James 14th (and second-placed U23 rider). Olivia Bentley, most recently seen in the Women’s Tour of Sussex, took 6th thanks to her podium in the Woodstock round. Harri James took 10th, and experienced lags (sorry chaps) Grant Goodall and Jez Hewitt rocked up to add a bit of mid-table respectability to the mix.

Now in its fourth year, the league overall has grown, with the addition of High Wycombe CC and associate membership of Oxford University CC, and included an ITT (ahh, civilised) from Oxonian for the first time.

The league couldn’t continue without all of the volunteers from each club who work really hard to put on races. The DPCC race this year was executed to perfection by directors David Emms and Simon Evans; if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Christian Prudhomme, there will be opportunities to run our 2018 event – come to the AGM on Thursday 19th October and seize power.

DPCC AGM – Minutes

Hi All,

Many thanks to all of you who attended the AGM last week.  For those who weren’t able to make the meeting, please use the AGM link on the website menu bar.  Password available from Club Secretary.  As many of you are aware, I stood down at the AGM but am pleased to welcome Tim Davies as the new club Chairman.  I would also like to welcome Vicky Lawson as Club Secretary, Gary Lester as Membership Secretary and Richard Gildea as TT Secretary.

Moving forwards, our next club event is the Nov 20th Cyclo-cross at RAL, so please keep an eye on the website for details.  We do need volunteers to ensure this event is a success, so if you are available, please let Mark Winks know as soon as possible – email

Didcot Phoenix CC AGM – 6th October, 7:30PM Jubilee Pavilion, Brighwell-cum-Sotwell

Hello to all members of Didcot Phoenix Cycling Club,

This message is to give notice of our Annual General Meeting, which will take place on Thursday 6th October at 7:30PM in Jubilee Pavilion, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.

If you wish to propose a motion for discussion, please send it to by Thursday 29th September for including in the final agenda.

This year I will be standing down as Chairman, following 3 enjoyable years in the role. With my young family in mind, I feel that our club would benefit from someone who is more involved in the regular club events acting as Chairman into next season and beyond.

Also stepping down this season will be our Club Secretary and Membership Secretary.  If you enjoy cycling with Didcot Phoenix and would like to put something back into the club, please let us know.  As a committee we typically meet about 6 or 7 times a year, at the Plough in Long Wittenham.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting, where we will be serving refreshments and cake on the night!

Best regards, Mike

DPCC Chairman

Autumn Newsletter

Club Badge

Hi All,

The nights are drawing in, the days are getting colder and for the umpteenth time this year, my commuter clothes are drying after another downpour 🙂 Yes, autumn is well and truly here and you can even buy mince pies in the local supermarkets!

To all of us at Didcot Phoenix, this time of year means the following:

  • Winter Turbo Training – Every Thursday from 19:00 at the Brightwell Jubilee Pavilion
  • Sunday Club runs now start from 09:30
  • Cyclo-Cross – Continues most weekends over the winter
  • Members need a Club Fleece to keep warm
  • Trophy and standards claims submission date approaching

Winter Training
Once again we are holding indoor turbo training sessions at the Jubilee Pavilion and my thanks goes out to Robert and Simon for hosting these evenings. Details can be found on the club website and are a great opportunity to carry form into the new season, socialise with club members and enjoy some thumping old skool music! All members are welcome, with a cost of £3 per session and you don’t even need to own a turbo trainer. If you are interested, please email to confirm your place.

Club Runs

09:30 start time from this Sunday 25th
Depressingly the clocks go back this weekend and with darker mornings, we start the club runs from 09:30 from Broadway. Full details of our club run agenda can be viewed on the website, with this week’s destination the New Herb Kitchen.

Following on from the recent club AGM, I’m pleased to welcome two new members to the Didcot Phoenix committee, as Dan Atkins and Mark Winks are sharing the CX Secretary role for the coming season. Both are active CX racers and you can see them racing throughout the Wessex and Central league series this autumn. If you are interested in taking part in a CX race, both will be keen to provide information about this type of off-road racing! It’s great fun, pretty muddy and a fantastic way of racing away from traffic.

Email if you are interested in taking part.

Après cycle wearClub Fleece
As modelled by Simon Evans at the AGM, the club is now selling fleeces which can purchased via If you would like to buy one of these items, please contact Simon.

Trophy and Standards Claims
As we approach the end of this cycling season, we start to look forward to our annual awards evening and the final events for the year. Details of the awards evening will be posted on the website soon, but beforehand all trophy and standards claims need to be submitted by the end of November. All first claim club members qualify for time trial standards and the various trophies available. See the Trophy website for details and if you have a claim, please let club secretary Martin Stanley know by Nov 31st.

Email for all claims

Many thanks to all of you who attended the recent club AGM. The minutes of the meeting can be found on the AGM section of the website. It was a great evening, not only with new members joining the club committee, but we also welcomed back old members, filled some key positions in the club and enjoyed socialising with teas and biscuits 🙂

That wraps up this newsletter and I hope to see you all on a bike soon.

Welcome by Chairman Nick Druce meeting opened at 7.45pm.

Apologies & minutes of 2011 AGM read by secretary, Robert Briggs: adopted.

Nick gave his report & commented on the success of cycling in 2012. For DPCC CX, TT & Audax all successful, but TT was operated without a TT secretary. However thanks to Duncan for stepping in.
Nick praised Stan for his amazing performances. Sadly Nick advised of the death of founder club member, Ron Chitty.
Unfortunate RTA on Club 10 (not DPCC member); well handled by marshalls.
Nick thanked all volunteers & was pleased with social events like Halfords Crit in Oxford. WOTG & Downton events positively supported. Good feeling generally in the club & some younger
members showing interest & TTing regularly.
Recruitment drive suggested & Nick has received some enquiries, but maybe necessary to broaden our horizons. It would be good to promote a road race & event for novices.

Nick thanked all the members & the committee.
Some new kit designs to appraise: see addendum to minutes.

Membership Dave Rodger-74 members & 5 lifetime members.

Treasurer Mick Fountain-£41 deficit, but on a running basis is making a slight surplus. CX made “whopping profit” thanks to Dunko’s CX event.
5 mile TT to be promoted next year for youngsters.
New TT numbers purchased.
Subs unchanged for 2013.
Ian asked if engraving costs could be trimmed.

TT Secretary (in absentia) Dunko- reported that we had well-attended TT season. Ron won 10 & 25, Ollie took hill-climb & nearly everyone posted PBs. Dates for 2013 to be lodged. Dunko standing down, but suggested a spreadsheet for volunteers for 2013.

Dunko thanked all helpers in 2012 & hoped that everyone enjoyed their season.

Nick invited volunteers for the post to come forward as soon as possible.

BC Secretary Trevor- standing down this year so Nick thanked him.

Could be combined with secretary, but best to remain independent.

Social Secretary Mike- Awards Dinner, Crit in Oxford, winter training about to start 01/11/2012. TT supper impromptu curry. Plans for casual drinks over the winter.

Kit- Nick announced proposal to change Club name & kit. Name change overruled by committee so will remain as is. Tom a graphic designer asked to design some alternatives which were circulated & universally welcomed.
Decided to adopt 3 designs & post them on the website & to seek votes from club members before final design is decided. Designs below…..

Election of Officers:
Membership & Kit-Dave
Social-Mike & Laura
Press (& BC Secretary)-Dunko

TT Delegates-Mick & Mark
Club Run Secretary-Nick thanked Matt for all his hard work in building up the popularity. Ron & Simon happy to fill the post jointly.
TT Secretary-nominations sought, but none forthcoming…….
BC Representative-nominations sought: Dunko proposed by Mike & seconded by Ian.
Committee members without portfolio-Matt proposed by Ian & seconded by Mick. Ian, Pete, Phill, Nikki & Pete Annells.

*Dunko’s proposal was read & discussed with Steve Rowe’s response aired viz extending TTs to youngsters (Sundays).
One TT a month suggested on the same course subject to finding the course & a TT secretary. Stadhampton 5 mile course already approved could be adopted. Dalton Barracks a possible alternative.
Dunko has approval from Dalton Barracks for a road race in 2013.
One a month aimed at youths for adoption 2014.

*Spinning starts 1st November at BCS Pavilion 7pm: all welcome.

*Website banner to be changed to be a moving banner featuring other club members & various biking disciplines.

*Concern was expressed as to whether as a club we are doing enough for Stan & it was agreed that some additional contact would be good such as sending him the AGM minutes, writing individually & possibly naming the youth TT series after Stan.

*Mike brought up Abingdon Festival of Cycling as an opportunity to promote the club. Audax event suggested.

*2013 Dates:
Audax-last Sunday June
Open 10TT-24th August
Open 25TT-8th September
CX-2nd December
*Steve Warwick kindly volunteered to lead a beginners Club Run once a month.
Meeting closed at 9.41pm
PS to minutes: Following the AGM, although unable to physically make Thursday night time trials, Steve Rowe has kindly offered to take on the administration of the TT calendar, co-ordination of the helpers for events and act as a point of contact for correspondence with governing bodies etc.
